As a Design Engineer for GM we are constantly under the gun with Federal Compliance.. I wont argue this point for the reason I mentioned in my first post about Be careful who you listen too here...There is always someone with no credentials saying that this is untrue or its ok to remove an airbag.. remove an air bag and get into an accident , Good luck with collecting anything.. lawyers will have your assets, and the assets of your family... Insurance rates are based on Federal safety guideline. insurance rates are based on compliance with all federal and State regulation.. Federal regulations supersede any State regulations. To the guy who said his insurance agent is ok with it... I would suggest you get another agent because, you would not get a cent when someone who actually knows federal regulations administers a zero pay out for your injuries sustain with a deleted air bag.

OFFICE OF VEHICLE SAFETY COMPLIANCE

ROOM 6111
MAIL CODE: NSA-30
WASHINGTON, DC 20590
FOREWORD
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has a legislative mandate under Title 49 of the United States Code, Chapter 301, Motor Vehicle Safety, to issue Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and Regulations to which manufacturers of motor vehicle and equipment items must conform and certify compliance. FMVSS 209 was the first standard to become effective on March 1, 1967. A number of FMVSS became effective for vehicles manufactured on and after January 1, 1968. Subsequently, other FMVSS have been issued. New standards and amendments to existing standards are published in the Federal Register.
These Federal safety standards are regulations written in terms of minimum safety performance requirements for motor vehicles or items of motor vehicle equipment. These requirements are specified in such a manner "that the public is protected against unreasonable risk of crashes occurring as a result of the design, construction, or performance of motor vehicles and is also protected against unreasonable risk of death or injury in the event crashes do occur."
Part 571
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards
CRASHWORTHINESS
Standard No. 208 - Occupant Crash Protection
Passenger Cars (Effective 9-1-97), Multipurpose Passenger Vehicles, Trucks and Buses (Effective 9-1-98)
Shall be equipped with air bags.

Think I'd rather have the airbag than some weird looking steering wheel anyway. The airbag will be a lot more useful in an emergency. And give an insurance company a way out of a claim and they WILL take it. If you remove a safety feature like this and drive it on the street your asking for trouble one day.
Not to mention, I can image this could also hurt the resale, I know I would never buy a car hacked like this.

I said I was not going to get further involved with this thread for obvious reasons.. the blind leading the blind is not new on this forum...and as I always say.. " Be careful who you listen too here... in this case.. you could loose your life, your home and your savings, based on advice given by the .... You know who's found on this forum...
Rear end someone in your C5 with a deleted air bag system and suffer catastrophic injuries , Your insurance company won't pay a Penny once the investigation show you deleted an airbag... That's why no shop will do this because if your injuries are 200,000 dollars, its on them...
Just another little FYI... Hospital cost.. I spent 31 days( 2 surgeries ) in the hospital last year.. the Bill was 529,000 dollars. My two insurance companies paid 459,000 dollars and the hospital accepted that because I have Medicare and my Retired Military Tricare for life...Congressional guaranteed no cost Medical coverage.
A simple bad choice like this could effect you and your family for the rest of your lives.

I thought it was cool, but not smart. I do understand everyone's point and I do appreciate the wisdom and concerns from all the members.
