I did a search but didn't see quite what I was looking for:
I removed my bezel today and sent it to Dennis at DoubleD Mods for modification, and am going to put a new head unit in. My main goal was appearance more than sound, so if I just put the head unit in and leave it at that, I'll be OK with it - not expecting it to sound much better than the terrible stock stereo in my '04 vert.
BUT!... If I were to, say add a small amp and a sub in the back, can the stock Bose speakers handle it at all? I'm definitely not going to drop $2K+ into this project, replacing everything, but if that would work and sound better, I might buck up for the amp and sub installation.
I haven't bothered Dennis with this question, although he'd probably have an answer and an honest one at that from what I've heard, sounds like they are swamped right about now. Just looking for any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
Exactly what I did. Put a 12" sub in the back with a small 500 watt amp under the passenger seat with a single din head unit. Sub sounds great and speakers sounded just fine as soon as I took out those cruddy woofers in the doors! They were the culprit of the popping sound when I would crank up to volume.
I just recently replaced the speakers in the rear and doors with the JL audio speaker package Dennis sells for about $200. They drop right in and sound awesome! No modifying or anything.
But yeah, do the sub and head unit now, speakers later, it sounds fine! If you have the popping I did then take those big woofers out of the doors.
You said the key, get in touch with Dennis. I got a set of Arc Audio replacement speakers and put in a small sub. Like you I started with the HU for appearance and although it looked better I wasn't happy having spent that money and left with terrible sound. I let Dennis know I wasn't looking for a "system" but wanted good quality sound. The HU, Arc Audio replacements and a Kenwood amp and sub did the trick.
We can hook you up in MANY different ways pending budget and if you want to do it in steps.
In my eyes..,.
If your going to put in an amp and sub we might as well put in a multi channel amp now and run 2 more pair of rca cables when doing this.
When the times comes to upgrade the fronts(it will as you will always want more lol)
then all we need to do is run new speaker wires from the amp out to the speakers. With the rca cables already routed to the multi channel amp...no need to remove the radio at a later time as well.
Just call me.
We will work out whats best for you and your application

WOW, your -04vert stock stereo sounds terrible. Unlike yours, mine sounds great or I guess my hearing is totally gone probably because of listening to the Beach Boys sounding off.
As you can see Dennis is right on top of this...figure out what6 you want to spend, then allow Dennis to point you to something within your budget, something a little under your budget, and something a little over your budget.
Many people would be surprised that pushing the budget just a little can sometime yield a big difference.
I've had lots of people tell me, If I only knew that for an extra 100 dollars I could upgrade to a much better ------.
eg, buy standard copper top batteries and get good batteries, but for an extra 10 % in cost you can get 40 % more life in their quantum battery.
Dennis we will talk for sure, like I said - the bezel went out today! And, yes - I don't know if they are all as bad, but the sound that comes out of my stock stereo is nothing short of terrible! My daily driver '14 base model ford focus has a WAY better sound!

Thanks for the input all, I appreciate it!
That's what made me pursue a better option; the system in our 2013 Taurus Limited is so clean and crisp. I wanted something as nice for the vette. Now I've got it.

Dennis
That is exactly what I did with Dennis' help. I did the head unit first, then the sub and 5 channel amp, then for Christmas I did the JL components in the doors and JL's in the rear. I did the install exactly how Dennis instructed me and the sound is unreal...I was actually shocked at how great it sounded. You will be surprised at how much better the aftermarket head unit will sound, but believe me...that is only the tip of the iceberg. Go with the amp and aftermarket door speakers! You will not be disappointed.
