Default Battery Tender Question

i was just wondering if a person should unhook neg. cable when using battery tender for the winter. I've always just left both cables hooked up and never had a problem, but i also don't want to cause a problem if it can be avoided.Any advice is appreciated cause i know there's a lot of knowledge on this forum Thanks guys.

No expert, but if you do you will have to reset everything in the spring.

No need to disconnect the battery cable(s). I have a Battery Tender Junior connected to my C5 and I'm using the adapter cable assembly with the ring terminals. The positive cable goes to the Bat stud on the fuse box, and the ground goes to the stud on the frame next to the battery.

All I have to do is connect the BT cable to the connector on the ring terminal cable and close the hood.

Complicated, no - not too much.

If the Car's Battery has the ability to start the Car, Then, NO,,, in most Vehicles. I've never heard of an issue or note in a GM Owners manual. But some Makes Recommend that their Car not be JUMP started. If a battery will not start the Car, remove the ground cable for safety , IE, Electronic Devices "

If you purchase or utilize a Battery Tender on your Corvette "UN-supervised" in particular,, THEN make sure that your Battery charger or battery tender is a "3 state Charger"

Else you will end up with a damaged battery and short life. \\

Don't be fooled with the text "Automatic Chargers"

You can Google and rear about 3 state battery chargers. 3 stage charger

We have been using and providing 3 state chargers from West Marine Stores for several decades .Yes, you can obtain a Port Supply discount card.

here is are links

West Marine text

"Our advanced 30A Automatic Portable Battery Charger harnesses high frequency technology and automatically delivers three-stage charging for your flooded starting or deep-cycle battery. It includes a digital LCD screen that displays charging and battery status with easy to understand icons, and features a patented Alternator Check to indicate if the alternator is maintaining battery level and Engine Start Timer to get you back on the water (or the road) quickly. 30A model can also deliver a powerful burst of Engine Start amps to jump-start your engine. It’s simple to use and easy to store with cable wrap and clamp storage built in."

Nope. I pull my battery out for 6 months over the winter and don't have to reset anything, even the radio presets, in the spring. Everything works like it's supposed to.

After a house burned down a few blocks from here caused by a battery tender hooked to a car in storage, I will not leave an unattended battery charger hooked to a car. I pull the battery out put it in the basement and put a charger on it every few weeks.

Manual recommends disconnecting the battery if storing for more than 3 weeks.

Holds memory for that long, wow. And thanks, now I'm paranoid.
P.S. Is it safe to store a battery inside a house?

I am sure it's rare but it can happen. The guy did get a brand new house out of it.

what year an engine PCM ??

On my '56 with the LS1, 2001 PCM I didn't realize that there is volatile memory, not the Flash memory where the OS is stored.

I never notice any difference when starting Her after the power to the PCM has been disconnected.

I was informed by the Engineer that preformed the performance tune in my PCM.

Totally stock 2001. It sits for 6 months without a battery and doesn't lose a thing.

I'd say having a battery tender start a fire is very rare. Not that it can't happen, but so could anything else that is on all the time and uses electricity. I keep my car hooked to a battery tender all year long when I'm not driving it and have done so for better than 11 years. The charger works perfectly. And I do not disconnect the cables when the tender is hooked to the battery.

It all comes down to what you are comfortable with. Won't hurt anything to take the battery out and charge it every so often or just leave it in the car and hook a battery tender to it.

Yes, it's rare but so is the use of battery tenders. The other reason I pull the battery is it gets to 25 below here and I have had batteries go dead and freeze, cracking the case. I sleep better knowing there is no battery in the car to cause any problems. I do use a tender during the summer for a week at a time if I'm not driving it for awhile.

Well, I would bet that here on the forum the use of battery tenders is higher than you might think. But as I said, it is a personal preference as to whether or not you want to use one.

And if I had to keep my car outside in the type of weather you describe, then I too would pull the battery out. Mine is always garaged so I don't have to worry about a battery freezing.

I wouldn't do that. An automatic tender would be a better choice.

If the battery is fully charged, what good would it do to run a charger every day? You would have a switch constantly turning it on and off. Nothing good would come of it.
