Ok, ok... I am kidding :) Sorry for the topic title.
:blueangel:
I need someone to help me out. I make electronics components for cars and what not... I need someone who owns a Z06 (doesn't matter if it's 01 or 02) to install a shift light for me.
I will give you the shift light FREE in your choice of color. I am not yet a supporting vendor so I am not going to post pics of websites until I get that sorted out with Troy (Email me back Troy! :)).
Anyways, the only conditions are
1) You must be willing to hook this up to your car (pos/neg/tach signal) - will require splicing into a few wires under the dash or at the fuse box.
2) You must be someone who will USE it and be able to tell me how you like it... preferably someone who drag races or at least runs the gears hard from time to time (come on - like any of you guys DON'T do that)
3) You must be willing to at least install it and try it out within a week of receiving it because I want to sign up as a vendor and sell these so I can't wait forever :)
These sell for $130, so it's a pretty good freebie.
First person who responds to this post and agrees to 1, 2, and 3 gets it - email me or PM me on the forum and I will get in touch with the details and to get your address, etc.
You might have more luck with 01 Z06 owners. The HUD in the 02s and 03s has a 'SHIFT' signal that pops up when it's time to shift. Works pretty good for all out running. I just wish you could program those shift points for when you want to run hard but 80-90% instead of 100. It would be nice to have them programable by shift. For example, 5500 rpm for 1-2, 6000 for 2-3, 6200 for 3-4....
Well this one has 2 seperate shift points that are independently adjustable.
Actually I don't care if it's a 2001 or 2002 Z06. I feel however that the people who would want and use a shift light are probably not people who would use the "shift" item on the HUD... it's a totally different purpose, IMO.
Usually (like on my Vette) the shift light is more of a "hey you're at redline, shift now!". A racing shift light like this one is a programmable device. You can set it to whatever RPM you like, and it has 2 seperate settings so you can set a high and low, or a shift-soon, shift-now light. Also it's very bright and gets aimed directly at your face, so you can stare down the track and it's bright enough that you'll notice it no matter what.
Me personally, I like to set the light about 100-200RPM before redline on most shifts, and maybe 300-400 RPM before redline on later shifts so I can get maximum MPH in the 1/4.
It is really more of a drag racing thing - the average joe driving around the street doesn't need this - but for drag racers it can help alot! I guess the real difference between this and the one on the HUD is that the HUD one probably isn't useful for racing and is more aimed to avoiding overrevs and for fuel economy, whereas a racing shift light like an Autometer, MSD or this one is geared towards the drag racers looking for that extra couple of tenths.
It's cool... I am not going to take any orders or post pictures or website info until I hear back from Troy... I only made this post so I could get someone with a Vette to install it and let me know how it goes to ensure it works before I pay $$'s to advertise on a Vette site :). I know all about paying for advertising so I don't want to step on any of the vendors toes :)
P.S. Thanks everyone for responding. LymanSS I am going to email you privately... he was the first one who said he definitely was up for this so I'm kicking it his way.
Thanks guys - once I'm straight with Troy I will post more info about this for the rest of ya.
IMO,, If you need something to tell you when to shift then you must be a novice when it comes to shifting a sportscar. Excpecialy when it comes to a corvette. Its something you just know when to do for maximum power to the rear wheels.Thas my valued opion!

Eh?
It sure doesn't hurt to have it. The tachometer in my archaic '87 is completely useless in 1st and 2nd. If I try to go by the tach and shift at 5800 I'm shifting at nearly 6300. Having a light gives you one less thing to worry about during a race so that you can focus on other issues.

I hear what you're saying but then Michael Schumacher must be a Formula 1 novice as well. And Collin McRae must still be learning the ropes of the WRC circuit... :jester
The lights are a nice feature to have because they help you get the last 200 rpm out of the engine in the first 3 gears without hitting the fuel cutoff. They are also cool because they can be programmed for different RPM. Also, keep in mind some folks on this board have cars putting out 500-700 rwh (on the juice or with boost). With that kind of power, timing the shift only gets harder. At the high end extreme, this is why the top fuel dragsters and funny cars don't even shift at all on their runs...

My light is set to 6500 and the rev limit at 6800. The engine is accelerating so fast that a split second too late means it hits the rev limiter.
If you're shifting with your butt-o-meter dyno then I bet you're shifting a lot slower than you could be.
