Probably Dumb question, but where do young Grandchildren sit in your car? No, before anyone asks, I didn't do a search, I wanted some of the new folks who haven't thought about it to get a chance to discuss as well. Simple issue, my grandson, the first of such offspring, just turned 1, and he's been expressing real interest in my cars. I want to give him a ride to the store with me but wasn't sure about strapping the car seat into the front seat of my 2000 Coupe.
Where do you folks shove the youngsters?
I guess I could alway tape his seat facing backwards looking at people behind us. ;-)
Where do I put my little ones? In my wife's Grand Caravan. One day my 1 & 4 year olds will get a ride in what the older girl calls a race car , a while yet.
Usually in my wifes Yukon. But the other day I had to take him to his speech therapy consult so I strapped up the car seat turned off passenger airbag and away we went. Hes 1 I mean sometimes you have to do what you have to do. Needless to say hes aways wanting to get in it when we are outside playing. Hes loves that car for some reason its pretty funny to watch him when I take him outside he goes straight to it. Gotta love it.
Yes that's him on the 1000 in my avatar...Thats a pic from last year the bike was running and he was grinning from ear to ear. Its in his blood I tell ya. I have a 15 year old daughter she was brought up same way around fast cars that's all she knows but in the same sentence she also knows that they can hurt you. Ive taught her to respect the car because the first time you lose that respect it will bite you every time. Ok back to the original thread..Carry on....
Why would you think a question of safety about the most precious cargo you could possibly carry would be a Dumb question? Probably the smartest most, pertinent question of questions in the history of ever!
Last time my grandson was in our C5... I watched him drive off.
The back seat obviously isn't an option
You could put in a full on, 4 wheel, rock climbing, roll cage...
Oh yeah.. congrats on the little man, have fun, it goes by way, way too fast.
This is my little guy on senior night...wow
He is a great kid too.

Unless you have a way to disable the passenger-side airbag NO car-seat or child under the legal age and weight to ride in the front seat of a car without a car- or booster-seat should be in a Corvette. With airbags deploying at 200 mph, the force of one deploying can kill or crush a small child or baby.
I sold my daily-driver 2000 coupe because of my new granddaughter. I'd rather get rid of my dream car than risk her in any way. I can always buy another Corvette. I can't replace my granddaughter.

Ah... didn't know that. Heck I remember having the kids standing in the seat beside me in my pickup...years ago another place and time. The good ole days.. THANK you for the heads up
I have edited my post.. would no way want anyone to do something illegal or to endanger any passenger in their car.

At one time there was (maybe still is) a GM approved mod to put a passenger airbag cut off switch into vehicles that did not have one. Some people had it done to early C5's.
Some of you need to slow down with the passive aggressive comments implying some of us would endanger a young child with out know all of your facts. I don't know if it was an option on all C5s, but at least on later ones disabling the air bag is very easy. The key hole is in the glove compartment. I have a 1 year old and a 3 year old who have both taken turns riding with me since they were a few months old. My 3 year old loves going for rides in the summer to get milkshakes and I even throw her jogging stroller in trunk and take to shows with me. Thursday has become her day at Corvettes at Carlisle. At least for the 04s, the seats have the LATCH system which makes securing a car seat very easy and very secure. My wife is a huge stickler on car seats and she approves.
You could turn the seat backwards and use the LATCH system, but at 1 he can legally face forward.
As I'm pretty sure this was aimed at me, the first part of my post reads:
While it wasn't directed at you, I did have your post in mind while typing. If I misunderstood, I apologize, but you later stated that you sold your car because of your new granddaughter. To me that implied that you had to make some hack to the car to make it safe and you felt taking a young child in a Corvette was irresponsible and dangerous. I have to admit, I get a little fired up when people imply I would do anything to put my children in unnecessary harm. If I took that incorrectly, I apologize I don't have any experiences with any C5s other than my 04, but I can tell you with the ease of turning the airbag off and the LATCH system, Corvettes are as safe or safer than a lot cars on the road today.

The ability to disable the airbag was not an option on the 2000 and earlier models, and mine at least did not have the LATCH system. Off the top of my head, I believe the airbag disable became optional equipment in 2001 and standard on all models for 2002-04. My 2000 was thus unable to have the airbag disabled without modification, and a newborn isn't allowed in a front seat in Texas anyway, so I sold it and bought a car that has a back seat. I wasn't implying anything, but instead was trying to inform.

No worries. No harm and I apologize for being over sensitive. But just to inform, newborns are allowed in the front seat in Texas. The law doesn't say where in the car the car seat must be. Just that they must be in a car seat and to follow manufactures instructions.

Partially incorrect. My '00, built on 2/29/00, had the passenger side air bag cutoff switch installed from the factory. You are correct in that early '00 and prior model years did not have the switch.
As was mentioned, there used to be a retrofit kit sold by GM to disable the passenger air bag. Have not seen anything on it for many years though.
