I need to replace the shift cable on my '04 automatic. I've read procedure.
It says "Remove the intermediate exhaust pipes. Refer to Intermediate Pipe in Engine Exhaust. Remove the driveline tunnel closeout panel. Refer to Driveline Tunnel Closeout Panel in Propeller Shaft."
Removal of exhaust looks pretty straight forward, but I haven't seen a discussion of that here on the forum. Would appreciate any advice or possible gotcha's.
PS. Cable must be replaced. It is damaged beyond repair.
Exhaust is pretty straight forward. Disconnect from the manifolds, disconnect the O2 sensors, disconnect from the over axle pipes and then I think there is a bolt in the middle someplace that needs to come out. I could be wrong on that one though. Then it should drop right out. Been while since I've done it but it's not to bad. Then it's just a matter of removing all the bolts for the tunnel plate. Might need another couple hands to make it a bit easier.
On a lift, this is a pretty straight forward job. Remove X-pipe or H-pipe and related connections (O2, etc) then drop it out. Remove tunnel plate (lots of bolts, 30+) and drop it out. Replace shift cable with new (some clips to deal with, no biggie) and then put it all back together. A bit tougher if doing it by yourself on your back in the garage. Really helps to have a second pair of hands when installing the X-pipe but is doable, just take your time. Had to do mine in the garage and it took about 2 hrs with breaks. Shifter noticeably smoother after new cable.

OK, Dropped exhaust and tunnel plate (35 screws thank you Craftsman cordless screwdriver). I still don't see how to get to shift cable mount brackets. Considering cutting access hole in drive line hump. Before I do such a thing hoping for more advise.
This has been covered before. Try these links and see if it helps. It is NOT recommended to cut an access hole in the drive line hump. MANY have had this problem and have fixed it without resorting to that. Some have had to remove console and bezel and then reached in from the top but be aware that if you pull the shifter up too far, you can break the new cable. Read some of these threads and you'll see what needs to be done. It's tight near the shifter but can be done. Mostly a flat blade screwdriver is your main tool there. If I remember correctly, it also helped to move the shifter to the 1 position. Made it more accessible. Just study a little, then go do it. It'll go better than you think. Take your time. When I did mine, I read a LOT before I started. Helped with understanding the full procedure. Good luck.
