Just purchased a 1999 c5 and made a mp3 cd but it will not play in the head unit nor the 12 disk cd changer in the trunk. They both work because the previous owner left two burnt cds and they play in both..... does it not take mp3 and some older cd file type? Thanks

My 12 disc player would only play retail cd's (I dumped it)
I plan on junking it all down the road but for the time being, what format does it play that i can try to burn my music that way.
Just tell your CD burner software to make "music CD" rather than "data CD". Note that you'll only get the usual 70-80 minutes of music rather than the hours typical of MP3 format.
Even after you do that, there is a strong possibility that the player won't play it. When CD burners became common on PCs, it took awhile for the player manufacturers to update their units to work with the burned CDs as well as the retail (printed) CDs.
I used iTunes to burn music CDs, they work fine in both the head unit and the changer. As already said, they don't play mp3 or other compressed formats, just music CDs.
This time i did not use Itunes, I used some burner on my computer that I just dragged the music into... Im assuming there mp3 files, and thats how its burning them... Ill have to try and see if theres an option for non-mp3 .... Lee I will try that , what other options do i have? Play some Will Smith cds prior to 99? haha.... hum... I might have one to try!

iTunes will convert mp3 and other compressed music files to CD music format on the fly as it burns them.
man you have to consider that modern formats were not available in 99.
I have enough used music stores around that I can kick down a couple of bucks for some fresh tunes from old CD's when out for a drive.
It may be an obsolete format, but there is no shortage of stuff to play. Just picked up a free CD from a local band playing a surf fest called "loose change" unusual that it was free, lot of bands sell CD's. Used to be vinyl, tough to play in cars, although better sounding.

Sounds like PC-burned music CDs will work fine in those head units. I just recall shopping for multi-CD changers in the late '90s and had to take "homemade" CDs to the store to test: there were a surprising number of name-brand players that couldn't read them.
The Bose unit in my car only stayed there as long as it took Crutchfield to ship me something made this century.

Are after market compact 12 cd players for c5 available?
Possibly, but I suspect they cost more than something that will take a USB drive that can hold 100 CDs worth of MP3s.
Since you obviously have a computer and apparently have CDs, problem solved. And that way you don't have to risk your original CDs in the harsh environment of a car trunk/dash.
I picked up a 99 a few weeks back and back with the disc changer I found this..
All I have to do is hold down the Aux CD button and instead of using the disc player it runs my ipod thru the factory system... just ran the cord under the carpet... I checked out ebay to find out what it was and it looks like they are pretty cheap compared to getting a newer system..
When burning, make sure to choose audio CD and slow speed, most of the time that will play.
I recently bought a '02 C5Z and the CD player plays some cds that I burned and not others. There is no correlation to type of CD-R or age. I reburned some that it gave me an error code on and after a couple of times it rejected the new ones. It also rejected a couple store bought cds. Any thoughts anyone? Would running a cleaning disc work? Replace the player? Thanks, Jeff
I like the ipod interface. Do you have a link to the ebay listing? How is it controlled from the radio?
I got mine from Amazon do a search on" ISimple IPod interface C5". It comes with the interface and a IPod cable. With the input cable it cost me less than 100.00 and sounds great !!!!
Press the aux button on the radio and now it will use all the CD controls
Stop forward reverse next track previous track etc
Works great just make sure you get the right input cable it does not come with it and there are two
There is one if you don't have the changer in the back. This cable simply plugs into the changer port on the radio
this one is part number PAC 97-04. u have to pull the radio out but its easy ...
The second cable plugs into the changer port in the back of the car u have the changer option.
This one is way easy to install. Remove oem cable from changer.
Then plug in I simple cable to the changer and then plug in the oem cable to the I simple cable
