Dude, glad to hear this. I've been following your thread for awhile and it looks like a 'win' in your corner. As for the type of screen, the finer the mesh gets, the more restrictive the air flow will become and again you might start running into possible heating issues. 1/4''x1/4'' mesh should be sufficient, but until you try different size mesh, you won't know for sure what size mesh works until you try it in real world application. You will never get air filter results from mesh, but now you know that a little periodic cleaning of those cores goes a long way.

P.S. Did you ever have your old radiator inspected or tested for blockage, jus wondering !!

Uh, be a bit depressing if it turned out there wasn't anything wrong with the old radiator, wouldn't it? Just sayin'...

When I stuck the garden hose nozzle on the inlet side, it almost sealed around the spout. When I filled it full and let it flow, I noticed there wasn't near as much flow as when I flushed out the block. There was even back pressure escaping past the nozzle. So, I'd bet it was the radiator but even if it wasn't (I tried burping the car several times before tearing into the radiator with the exact same results) I have the peace of mind the cooling system is good for many miles to come.

Thanks for following and for the screen/mesh advice. I figured the finer the screen, the less the flow but wanted to know if anyone had tried it. Last thing I need is another cooling issue, so I will likely buy the 1/4"X1/4" mesh at Home Depot and install that.

you shouldn't really need any additional screening if you do routine cleaning of the AC condenser and the radiator...what you were dealing with was probably a 14 year accumulation of crap...

True...I, again, cannot believe the amount of junk that came out of the A/C condenser. It seemed to never end. I was lightly tapping on the housing to dislodge it for 15 minutes and it wouldn't stop coming out! Amazing, but these cars truly are part street sweeper.

You are preaching to the choir.... been there done that! Glad you have seen the light Too bad more C5 owners haven't realized how important taking the radiator OUT and really Cleaning it is...

I'm going to routinely take the radiator cover off and clean it out in there. I was able to find a long and skinny BBQ grill brush to get in between the condenser and radiator and knock off the surface junk, the rest I'll tap out like I just did.

It's one of those areas/things that's easy to overlook and if you don't really know these cars inside and out, chances are it'll happen to you. I've had my C5 for four years now and I'm still learning her little quirks.

Drove the car all over yesterday in 95F+ degree heat, with and without the A/C on.

With the A/C on, the car sits at 192F while driving and when sitting in traffic, it went up to 201F and held.

With the A/C off, it sits at 192F and in traffic, slowly crept up to 221F and held. The fans don't even go on high mode.

The A/C also blows much colder with the condenser cleaned out and working more efficiently.

It's nice to have this peace of mind now!

At speeds over 35 the fans do not run at all irrespective of engine temp.
Thanks 8vette7... I have copied this to my C5 file for future reference.
