Default Help to remove shift handle

I would like to replace my current shifter (see pics) handle with the OME one. But I cannot figure out how to get at the demon key. I tried to pry (very gingerly) the silver top cap but it would not budge. Then I tried to unscrew the top half again with no success. Anyone have a shift handle like this that can show me the way?

That's not the OEM shift ****. Most (all?) after market ***** are screwed on. I would pop the gaiter, put a pair of vise grips on the lever, and try to unscrew it. You do not want to put any real "twist" into the shift box itself, and the vise grips will stop that happening.

Did you pull the shifter boot down to see if there was a jam nut.

Yes I did. See picture. I am hesitant on using vice grips to try and turn the shift **** as the previous post suggested. I do not want to scratch the surface. But if it is everyone’s thoughts that the **** is twisted on and does not use the “T” plug, I will give it a try.

What I said was use the vise grips on the shaft not the **** (any marks will get covered by the gaiter or boot), then twist the **** using your hand, or a "grip cloth" or a strap wrench, depending how tight it is.

Is the collar below the ball a separate piece that unscrew from the base of the shifter ball? Some aftermarket shifter ***** have an Allen key screw hidden under a removable collar.

Poped the boot again. Felt no allen key hole. So, it looks like the next step is to gab the shift shaft with vice grips and try to twist off. Will try this tomorrow and will give an update. Any other ideas before tomorrow are welcome.

Thanks everyone.

Just a suggestion, but see if the black **** separates itself from the bottom half. Then check for a set key. Again just a suggestion.

Update on my shift **** removal. I tried everything that has been suggested with the cautionary "do not damage" approach and nothing has work. I also tried to pry the top cap and the black ring up but without success. If any of the parts are screwed on, then someone may have used lock right on the threads. My efforts now will go to the various vette vendors and see if they have this **** in stock. It has a C5 logo on the cap so hopefully it is still being offered. If not, well it stays on and hope I do not have to replace the boot.

Thanks to all who made suggestions.

I found this pic of a ****, I'm not sure if the construction of your **** is the same or not. It looks like the upper half unscrews and there's a set screw inside .... Just a thought.

That sure looks awfully similar to the OP's shifter ****.

Thanks Bill. Except for the color, it appears the same. I will increase my effort to unscrew the black ring (red in the one you found) again. If my 72 year old grip does not do it, I will get one of my younger neighbors to give it a try.

Thanks to all once again. A great forum

Looks like one of AO Engineering's *****. Most of their ***** were one-piece, then they started offering the 2-piece versions with different color upper rings.
They were a small concern in Florida that is no longer around. Eckler's, among others, used to sell their *****.

OK, I tried again and the black portion will not unscrew with the strength of my grip. Looking closer at the photo and seeing the black circle ring, I am wondering if the ring fits into a grove in the red cap (and not threaded) and should just pop off (but it does not). Any thoughts?

If the cap is treaded, what do you think of applying some heat from a hair dryer to help in the removal?

I'd try getting a piece of old inner tube from a tire store, cut you a strip about 2" wide and long enough to go around the ****.... double it up if necessary so you don't mar the surface of your shift ****... wrap it around the ****, to protect it and give you something that will grip the metal... then use some channel locks and put some torque on it and see if you can get it broke ... without breaking it. Just a thought
