Default Hidden Switch

So, I put in a front camera with my new double-din Android head unit. I put in a splitter with the rear camera input, and a switch on the dead pedal to give 12v to the head unit to activate the 'reverse 12v' input.

But, I found the dead pedal switch, despite being at the very top of the pedal, was still in the way when I would put my foot there to rest and I'd activate the camera. It's also extremely inconvenient, as I usually have the clutch pushed in when I'm about to park, so that means I have to put the car into neutral, let off the clutch, push the dead pedal button, go back to the clutch, etc. etc.

So, I came up with this.

What does a block of wood attached to a worm clamp have to do with anything?

Well, here's the answer (don't mind the dirty car, she's getting cleaned after all this work is over):

And then this:

Just thought I'd share in case anyone wanted an easy to use hidden switch for something.

That's a really neat idea. I'm all about hiding switches to keep that clean factory look.

Isn't that switch gonna be sliding back and forth on every shift?
How about fixing the switch upright instead such that the shifter shaft pushes against it when in reverse?
Just a thought... if I'm understanding this right, the switch is for the reverse camera to be active for backing up, yes?

You've got it all wrong. The switch provides power to the camera on the FRONT of the car, and switches on the 'reverse' input of the head unit so that it shows the camera.

I have another camera on the rear of the car that comes on when in reverse; it's powered from the reverse lights.

I didn't want to have to see it. I don't really like the look of aftermarket buttons and switches sticking out of the dash. It took a lot just to sell me on double-din because it doesn't really look very good to me, until I saw the version with the ashtray delete. I also required that the new radio have adjustable button colors so I can dial it in to exactly the same color as the HVAC buttons.

I guess I just prefer a factory look.

I am all over that! I find in general the aftermarket double-DIN installs look, well, aftermarket/out of place. I'd do the same if I were to go with one ever (extremely unlikely as I very rarely even have my radio on); delete the ashtray and ensure the new head unit lighting matches the rest of the dash lights.
And there' the main reason I'd never bother replacing my stereo; the heater controls to me look very out of place once the radio is updated. I think the area almost looks worse after.

I really agree with you. I wouldn't have bothered upgrading the head unit except that it's my daily driver, so having an Android touchscreen/Waze traffic reports/Bluetooth is awesome.

My daily commute is about 15 minutes each way, so the sound of my engine is enough for me. 😀
