Default New Diff

Hi everyone, just put a brand new straight from GM 3.42 diff in my car. I filled it with royal purple max gear with friction modifier already in it. This is my question. Is there any breakin procedure for a new diff? Just figure there has to be something to do before going all out on a new set of gears. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The answer to your question is yes. Drive easy for the first 4 to 5 heat cycles.

Also, the clutches and pre-load springs in the GM differential are prone to failure. When you become dissatisfied with the GM diff, call RPM Transmissions and have them build you a diff with a WaveTrac - http://www.wavetrac.net/ - differential assembly. End of problem.

i know every time I done a gear swap I was told to take it easy for 300 to 500 miles, 1st few drives i was told not to take short trips (a few miles) but long enough to heat up the diff to normal temps (15 to 20 miles) then let it cool

if you dont take it easy durring brake in you'll wind up with a whine (learned the hard way)

I have put 3 new gm c5 Z06 rear ends in 3 different hpde cars on 315 6a"s and not had issues with any of them the new replacement C5Z has all the c6z upgrades in it already, carbon plates and 2piece shafts heavier spring plates just like the ones from DTE. I do agree 4-5 heat cycles easy then have at it.

Awesome thanks for the info! I wasn't aware that it had upgrades already so that is a great bonus.

I read to do a bunch of figure eights in a parking lot after changing the gear oil in the differential... does this also apply to a new unit?

Doing figure 8's is done for working the friction modifier into the rears clutches.

When a posi rear that makes noise on turns, you have to add GM modifier to the lube, doing figure 8's works the stuff into the clutches.

If you notice your rear making noise on tight turns you may have to add the modifier, GM Limited slip axle additive part #1052358.

Some lubes say you don't need it with their lubes but time will tell if you do need it.

Yup, I knew about that... my point was regarding the new diff; I assume the same would apply, since it will be a fresh fill as well and I wouldn't imagine that they prelubed it before shipping it
