Just got my car back from dealer - all new fluids/seals in the rear where needed - ready to go. After about 300 miles on the freeway I pull in for a pit stop and at parking lot speeds near the pumps I hear what seems to be some kind of whistling noise. Can't really tell where it's coming from.
It's consistent.
Not affected by engine RPM, in or out of gear, AC on or off.
I can hear it in the cabin but haven't been able to pick it up outside the car.
All readings are normal. Car's running fine.
Any ideas appreciated. We're a long way from home ...
Sounds like the air pump(smog pump)...mine does it all the time, would not worry about it. Pumps air into exhaust to lessen the pollution readout at tailpipe. The sound is a whistle sound drivers side front of engine. Safe journey.

Smog pump it is. I would have accepted muffler bearing just to clear the concern and keep on traveling.
It's honest support like this that makes our forum the best.
I think El Original nailed it. Believe it is the whistle-like sound I hear when first starting the car that, as Trios says, is supposed to run for only a few seconds.
We're in Birmingham and planning to visit Barber Motorsports Park museums today but think we'll visit Barber Chevrolet first.
Yep, unless there's something wrong it's only on at cold start. Maybe a vacuum leak?
Thanks for the input. Believe it may be the air pump malfunctioning. Thought about vacuum but (might be wrong here) assumed a vacuum leak that pronounced would change with the RPM of the engine and cause it to run rough. 'Course this is from someone who hasn't wrenched his own car since my '56 Chevy.
Awesome forum. Believe it is by definition a place where the ideas of each come together for the benefit of all.

Slideshow: A Jaguar designer's personal project imagines what a modern front-engined Corvette might look like if Chevrolet revisited the golden age of the Stingray.
