Default Ac vs non ac mpg drop???

Hey guys leaving tomorrow morning thinking 4am for a 950 mile leg of my road trip....
what kind of drop can I expect when I kick my AC on.. i get 31mpg cruise control at 65
more money I save on gas the more money I can spend on monty cristo samiches at disneyland..

wondering if its worth leaving maybe an extra hour or 2 earlier for non AC drive time down in CA.. planning on 15 hour drive..

last min food for thought....

Every car is different, but I read somewhere that A/C can reduce mileage from 1 to 3 MPG. I guess you have to figure out if it's worth it to you.

Do the math; 950 miles at 31 mpg x $3.65 gal = $111.85
950 miles at 28 mpg x $3.65 gal = $123.83
Total savings for no AC = $11.98
Monti Cristo at Disneyland =$24.99

If you're that tight on the budget you can get 3 Churros for your $12 savings. Life's full of choices hope you make a good one.

As soon as you hit the bumper to bumper at Orlando you'll have to turn the A/C on to keep the coolant temperature below 220 or 230.

There goes 1/2 a sandwich.

In all honestly, I would much rather be comfortable and potentially lose a mile or two per gallon than try to safe a few pennies on gas.

HAHA thx guys

1-5 MPG is cool beans.. my ford v6 only gets 18mpg on a good HWY day and 14 in city with AC

i think i am good to go ... i just didn't want a 20% drop looks like im set..

already spent $1200 on amusement park tickets and other entertainment
saving $50 on AC would be cool but it looks like it is not going to be an issue

I got 31.3 MPG's calculated on the way down to Florida when I didn't have AC on. (First few hundred miles it was dark and cool out) then we got to Alabama and it was H.O.T. So the ac went on. I didn't actually calculate this time, but the DIC had said 30.5 for the first half, but went down to 30.0 once the ac went on.

FYI - running with the AC on gives better gas mileage than with an open window.

And anyway, (1) it's going to be near 90 here the rest of the week, and (2) you won't be getting anything close to 31MPG in the traffic the last 100miles either.

With the windows down you kill the aerodynamics

I haven't tried a comparison on my C5's, but I purposely tried testing the difference on my C4 ('94 M6) on my 100 mile per day commute to work.

On my C4 it was 3 mpg worse with the AC on than with the windows open.

On another note, I also found that driving in the rain caused about 2 to 3 mpg drop in highway mpg also.

AC will be on in my car regardless of cost.

I agree with Vetteman. Who cares? You are driving a luxury sports car. Use the luxuries.

Forget the AC mileage drop, you will lose almost 3 MPG having the lights on.

There is never enough of a drop to justify being warm and uncomfortable. If this is a concern of yours, maybe you should be driving something else, like a Chevy Spark. Me, I'll close the windows and put on the A/C, that's what its for.

I wouldn't really call it a luxury sports car... It's more of just a straight sports car haha.
