I used an LS7 clutch in my 02 Camaro for years with no issues, though I didn't drag race it. When it came time to replace the clutch in my C5Z I went with a Mantic single. 2 years and still going strong. Both using a 600+hp 416.
So what happened? Im gonna go with your probably took out your cam and a lifter. Bearings are prob worn. But not spun unless you really just drove it with no oil pressure.
Looks like you are right! Engine finally out but still attached to cradle. Heads and intake off. Cam lobe towards front drivers side wasted. Lifter stuck in bore. They said will probably fall out when they get the cam out. Still haven't looked at bottom end but cylinders look really good. Unless a big surprise when oil pan comes off this is very rebuildable. Will send it out soon. If overbore needed we will replace pistons with forged units otherwise stay the same. Bump compression to 11.5:1. Port 243 heads, clean up LS6 intake and port that throttle body. Probably going a little bigger on the cam. Now 232/236,595/601,113 xer lobes. Thinking 236/240 on a 113. 12 degrees of overlap vs the 8 I have now. A tad bit more choppy and should have good manners. Shop insists the LS7 clutch with steel flywheel excellant choice so I guess I am going with that. The stock clutch with 115k on it actually looks really good but no way it's going back in. Should be a nice set up when done. Current set up put 420 to the tires. Hoping for 50 or so more with minor mods. Should be a nice set up when done
Picked a cam.......Comp 238/240, 605/609,112. Should talk some serious stuff at a stop light!!!!! Shop says they have had great success with that cam in C5Z's.
Short block done. Wisco forged pistons. Should start putting it back together middle of next week. Once they get started it should go pretty fast. Heads might be the hold up at this point. They are porting them in house and after they need to go out and get a valve job. Not sure if they have started that process.
Ok, went to shop today to check on progress. Short block was supposed to be back from machine shop but wasn't. They asked me if I had time to go pick it up for them as they are swamped. I said ok, no problem. Got to the shop, medium sized place that was super clean and organized. Here's what I got:
Mahle forged pistons and ring set
LS3 rods
All ARP fasteners
Degrease and hot tank block
Bore and hone with torque plate 10 over
polish stock LS6 crank
Glass bead rods
Floating pins instead of press in
Balance assembly
All this at a total cost of 2400.00. I think thats pretty fair. I was glad I got to go pick it up. Talked to the man and was impressed with his knowledge, demeanor, and shop. He told me he didn't understand why people don't like rebuilding these motors and opt for new stuff. He said they are easier than early Chevy small blocks to do. Anyway, the shop has parts now! They still haven't done my heads so that will slow things down now. If they can just get that part done we will just be a couple days away from being done. Anxious to see what it puts down on the dynojet.
I too had the ls7 set up. Took a poop. I've had the mcleod set up for a couple of months. Been driving it as if I'm testing it to give. No problems at all. Might just change the shifter. Dont know where to start.
I did however ordered my breathless performance headlights. Thats a start.

Glad to see someone having work done a local shop spreading the money around instead of just going to GM ,should be a great motor. Good luck..
Finishing up porting heads today then sending them out to the same shop that rebuilt short block for a valve job. They say they should have heads back by next Tuesday. They are going to port intake and throttle body. Staying with the stock LS6 parts there to save money. With a little luck it should be all back together by next Friday! I will post up dyno results and total cost to see what kind of bang for buck I got. These guys are really good so I am hopeful for a great number
Ok, looked it up myself. Comp has many different type cores. The part number for my cam is 54-448-11. If you look at their core chart the "54"stands for "steel billet"
