Hello everyone I am i need of some advice with an issue I have been having. I live in a fairly quiet apartment complex (non garaged) unfortunately. I keep my car covered and (beforehand) tied down with bungie cords. Over the last month I have noticed my cover being disturbed on an everyday basis and I have slowly been growing more aggravated everyday. Last week I go out to wash my cars and i notice my plates for the corvette have been stolen. Called the police and purchased new plates. I receive a phone call from the person who stole my plate (extremely dumb move on their part) the next day from a receipt that was in my glove box, telling me that this person was also inside my car. I only have one key and one fob for the car and the auto lock feature is turned on in the rare event I would forget to lock the car. There are no signs of forced entry on my car. So how would someone gain access to the car without having the keys? I am open to any and all suggestions. Also could they possibly have some random key fob that is able to unlock the car. My car is 2002 model.
The Auto Lock feature locks the doors once the car is moving (6-speed, 10 mph) , or if taken out of Park (automatic), not after you close the door and walk a way . Since it appears the thief checked your car daily, is it possible you left it unlocked that one time?
The fob would have to have been trained to your car at the same time as the one you have. Why would the person call you, were they wanting ransom for the return of the tags?
Do you have the passive FOB feature? Maybe you are too close and it's opening your car.
Do you have call display? Call the cops and tell them the person from that number made an illegal entry? Careful of retaliation though... (in other words I actually wouldn't do this, just an option)
Bottom line make sure you lock your car.

The passive lock feature went out after the 1999 model year. It was not included on the 2000-2004 model years. I would tend to think like Mickeyrx70 that you thought you locked your car but did not, thereby give access to the idiot that took your tags.
Go to Walmart and by a trail cam... park your car somewhere that it would be advantageous to using the cam to get good pics of the culprit...
be creative setting up the cam so he will have no clue your using it... then nail his a$$
And why did he call you? Was he pissed that you didn't leave him anything to steal, so he took your plates?
Personally, if you live in an apartment complex and you don't have access to a garage, I wouldn't even put a cover on it. To me, covers on cars in parking lots just attract criminal activity. I bet if you didn't cover it, your plates would have still be on there.
If he called you I'm sure there's record of the phone number he called from. So long as you have the date and time you could probably give that to the cops and help with their investigation.
thanks everyone so far. Yes I finally had a follow up with a police officer on yesterday and the apartment management about the situation. The theif turned out to be the person living behind me in the same building. According to 'them' - 'I had a corvette that was stolen two years ago and never recovered so I assumed it was my car.' Basically an ignorant cop out response for trying to justify trespassing into my car and stealing my plates. According to the police since I didn't recover the stolen plates and failed to record the conversation where the person admitted to literally everything I have no evidence to press charges. The main thing that is bugging me is that I believe this person has been in my car multiple times because of the way the conversation was going. This morning I attempted to have another conversation with the person with my recorder on this time. The only question I asked is how were you able to gain access to my car multiple times and the conversation was immediately shut down and a door was slammed in my face. At this point I have the cover tied down with steel cables and padlocks so the cover can not be pulled up to access the doors or the plates. I am hoping that I can recover the persons fingerprints from the padlocks at this point.
Wow, that just absolutely 'Sucks', and you knowing that the person who committed the theft lives in the same building as you !!! This defies even 'stupid criminal logic' as to his actions (phone call, Really!), this circumstance would really test my own ability to stay calm and rational and to not go over and KICK HIS A$$ !! Jus Say'n, hope things smooth out and you don't have any further issues, Good luck !!
So much for victims rights these days, I still would KHA !! Jus kid'n (chuckle) By the way, how did the thief approach and convey his crime to you ??
That's one of the strangest stories ever. I hope you told him or her in no uncertain terms what will happen to them should any lasting damage befall your pride and joy.
Document everything. Write down your version of events to the best of your ability, with as many details as possible. You already know this though. Hope it works out. Some crazy people in apartment complexes. Crazy people everywhere but apartments are scary.
Yes I agree this is the most absurd thing I have ever experienced. The basis for committing crimes against my property in her eyes is she thought it was her stolen car. And yes I have been livid this whole week but I have calmed down. Yes I have police report and have started documentation on EVERYTHING. I just have to be patient and build evidence against her. Another twist to this story is that this lady has had a history of doing things like this according to the management staff. So I asked why haven't they addressed this issue or evicted her? But it will take me putting a stop to all this.
Her story has to be complete BS. Why would she steal the plates (if she actually did) instead of reporting it to the police? And why would she break into the car and call you, when she could easily have confronted you? She knows where you live!
Sounds like a nut job - proceed with caution!
