Default Another Tire Question Thread: 245 vs 275???

I have read many of the tire threads on this forum

My Z06 is not a track car or a daily driver. I am sticking with the stock wheels, so I am trying to decide between:

Michelin Pilot Super Sport
F: 245/45/17
R: 295/35/18

Continental Extreme Contact DW
F: 275/40/17
R: 295/35/18

According to the current prices on Tire Rack the Super Sports will cost $190 more than the Conti's. My preference would be to buy the Super Sports.

My questions are:
1. How will the 245 width tire up front affect performance?
2. Will it present any kind of issue for steering, ride, or handling?
3. Is it a better choice over the 275 Conti?

Dave

It's probably still a better overall setup even being a 245. I have the conti's and they're great, but the PSS is a superior tire. I want to hear from some actual people who have driven on the pss in those sizes though

I would also like some feedback and this comparison... and not to hijack your thread but will the 275 cause any issues with traction/stability control?

I had those pilot super sports installed on my z this past weekend and they handle just fine. They don't mess with traction control or active handling as far as I can tell however ive only had it up to 130ish mph so far. The car feels noticeably more nimble and confident especially in corners. The floaty feeling that my previous tires (kumho ecsta mx) gave me is completely gone. The tires don't tramline at all, I've only got about 300 miles on them so far so take that for what it worth. My only gripe is that the front tire looks stretched on the rim more so than my last tire obviously because they were 275 and the PSS is a 245. It looks a bit out of place but I am willing to overlook that for the performance they provide even in a thinner tread width. Side note the 295-35-18 are on national backorder with no ETA at this time from Michelin or tire rack. Therefore I bumped down to the 285-35-18, no problems with the fit of this tire on my rear wheels. I have the conti's on my 04 GTO and they feel squishy, of course the GTO is also a pig at almost 4000 lbs so im sure that adds to it. I'm planning to write up a decent review once I get about 1000 miles on them.

I'd love to see some pics of this set up.

I'm running Continental ExtremeContact DW's on my '04Z. 255/40R17 fronts, and 295/35R18 rears. I love them so far. I've had them on for about a month and driven 500 miles or so. They do feel a bit "squishy" when cornering at high speeds, but I rarely push the car around corners and will never track it. I would've loved to have run Michelin's, but I picked up the Conti's at nearly half their price. Traction is much better than the F1 Supercar's that were on the car previously. Very happy with my DW's.

The aspect ratio on a 245mm tire is going to be too short compared to a stock OEM setup.

Thanks for all of the responses.

I am not sure I understand the last response from SKMCobra

According to one of the online tire calculators-with an OEM front tire size of 265/40/17, the sidewall is 4.17 inches.

The sidewalls for these alternatives are:
245/45/17=4.34 inches
275/40/17=4.33 inches

These sidewalls are taller than stock height. Is this a problem?

Mr Goat-can you show us pictures of your new tires on your Z?

Dave

I believe that would require 18/19" wheels.

When I was looking for tires last year I swear I saw this combo available in 17/18, a quick Tire Rack search pulls up nothing though, yep. OD is close enough, but if not available...

245/45/17 = 110.25mm x 2 = 220.5 total side wall height plus rim
275/40/17 = 110.00mm x 2 = 220.0 total side wall height plus rim

I stand corrected...they are nearly identical and there will be no issues. I had in my mind they were the same side wall percentage and they are not.
