Another vote for the 9011/9012 HIR bulbs. Made a noticable difference over the stock. For better high beam performance, you can also get the 4-HI harness that keeps the low beams on when you switch to high beams. I did both for about $100.
You don't want to keep the low beams on when the high beams are on. That just throws a lot of foreground light that ruins your distance vision.
If you're more concerned with "looks" that's one thing, but I would advise to never just slap HIDs into the stock reflector housings. The OE reflector housings are NOT designed for HIDs.
HIDs are designed to be used with projector lenses. BIG difference.
The stock C5 lights are nothing short of horrible.....
I researched long and hard, ended up purchasing thru JW Motoring the HID Bi-Xeon lights, large ballasts, with the 4 light harness etc. For me all my lighting issues were solved.
Now the C5 has lighting to keep up with my RR and I can see nicely at night

I've had these for almost a year now, and it improves my vision. There are also many other members here that have this mod and are happy with it, so I have to disagree with you.
I have put HIDS in everything I have owned and never had a problem with the light spread. Or housing issues, if you are looking for more light HIDS are the way to go. You don't need projectors yeah they help but you don't need them.
