I've got my 99 for sale on autotrader and I'm getting these emails from this guy who wants to buy my car for asking price ($16,900) for his Father. He says he would send full payment to my paypal acct. and have it picked up after the money hits my acct. He's, obviously out of state (MI), and made me this offer from just pics. I sent him. Sounds fishy to me, what do some of you think? I got some of this BS type offers when I sold my motorcycle some years ago. I think to good to be true!
Tell him you will hold it for him and to bring cash when he comes to pick it up. There are scams using Paypal and I almost got scammed selling a vintage sign on Craiglist. He offered me more than I was asking.
I bought my '55 online and paid with paypal with no issues, now I've also bought a ls2 engine on ebay using paypal and got scammed. Paypal stood behind their services and refunded the whole amount, my understanding is once he sends you the money,it's yours. If you're still having doubts, have him wire it straight into your bank account and you won't pay the paypal fees. I personally like the insurance and backing of paypal. GLWS,L8R ZFLASH

Yes, but my understanding is that its usually from a stolen/hijacked account so its not his money but stolen money meaning it will be taken away from you and he will have your car.
I just got the same offer today.
If its too good to be true, complicated or odd, you know its a scam. For example, today the email said the gal was in a meeting so she couldn't talk
Wire Transfer only for me or CASH in the bank lobby. Good Luck selling your car.
This "scam" is not nearly as sophisticated as you guys think.
First of all he does not want your car, he will not pick up your car, nor have anyone he knows come pick it up.
There is no money, no hacked paypal accounts , no stolen money...NOTHING.
All he will do is send you a phony paypal invoice in your email, which will probably be even more then you asked for , and then it will ask YOU to pay the service fees, paypal fees , or refund him the extra money he sent "accidentally"
That's it, that's as good as it gets
For the fun of it accept his offer and see how it goes.
1Willy1 described the scam correctly. No certified check, no Paypal. Only cash or a wire transfer to your bank. You go to your bank to verify that the money was transferred to your account. Get a printout from your bank of the deposit.
I ask for certified check, deposit it and wait for it to clear, then transfer the goods. More comfortable with that then a wad of cash. PayPal has been good but never did a transaction more than $1000.
