I found some replica C7 style Z51 wheels that I would like to put on my C5. However in the description, they are described as being PVD chromed rather than the regular chrome process.
Does anyone have any experience with this type of chrome process? How is the finish as far as appearance, durability, ease of maintenance?
And just recently I saw the same wheels being advertised on a vendor site, stated as being triple chrome plated, and about 400 dollars more. Vendor stated they were indeed triple chromed, however the sample pictures are exactly the same from both sources so what is one to believe?
In my experience, no. But you never know what kind of chemicals/cleaners people use on their wheels. I've done 15-20 warranty deals with PVD wheels through different manufactures. I'm not a chrome fan, just remember that chrome is a higher maint. finish that I never recommend for a daily driver. Other than that, chrome is going to be the better option.
One of my other car's factory alloy wheels are PVD coated. The finish is not the "hard" reflective surface of regular chrome, but more like a high polished wheel. Whether this is the way all PVD wheels are or just this manufacturer's, I can't say. Car is almost 3 years old and I haven't had any issues with the finish, although it doesn't get the kind of exposure (e.g., road salt) that other areas experience.
I have a set of these on the car I recently purchased. They came from West Coast Corvettes. I don't know the type of chrome finish but they look great and so far have held up fine.
