Default Hood Stain

I recently bought a 2003 sprial grey coupe. There is a stain on the hood that I thought was sap. It has resisted removal from car wash and Turtle Wax bug/tar/sap treatment. I tried buffing it off with an orbital sander and rubbing compound and it still remains. Any ideas? Is this a paint defect?

Might be a hard-water stain...try rubbing it with vinegar.

you might try sanding it very lightly with 1500 grit sand paper and see if it will take it out... then buff and polish. Try a tiny spot and see if it works... if it does do the whole thing.... I had ghosting from the corvette badge on our trunk lid... and that is how I got rid of it.

Does the stain have a 'feel'? That is, when you run your hand over it, can you feel it? I'd try wax and grease remover, vinegar, alcohol--all the 'normal' mild household cleaners. No acetone, lacquer thinner, paint thinners, etc, though, unless you're REAL confident it's the original factory paint.

I wouldn't start by sanding it yet, and when you do, start with 2000 grit worn down by rubbing the sandpaper against itself. Knock the initial sharp abrasiveness off the paper before you use it. You can always go courser later; the less you sand down the clearcoat, the better. When/if you sand the area, do it wet, not dry. While it's wet, you'll be able to see if you're making progress. If nothing changes as you sand, I think you're SOL; in that case, it'd be a defect during the paint application.

Remember to wax the area whenever you're done buffing and polishing.

Hope it is just a surface stain that will come out with either vinegar or some very light sanding. You could always take it by a trusted body shop and see what they say.

Did the vodka remove the stain, or just your ability to see it?
