Hi guys. I finally joined the vette club, and I'm not sure if my car has a problem. I've searched but couldn't find an answer, so here's my question.
The car runs at the proper temperature according to the gauges. However, when I shut it off, I hear alot of ticking and what sounds like coolant draining in the engine bay near the heads.
My fluid level is fine, and I have no leaks. The amount of noise just seems excessive compared to any other car I've had.

The car is all stock.
I'm not actually seeing any liquid. I'm just hearing the sounds that you normally hear from an overheated car. The expanding-metal pinging.
Never hear anything from engine compartment even after a long drive. (I open the hood to let it cool down too) Do you have headers? Not normal in any case. Suggest you open hood and listen for the culprit.
I haven't noticed anything like that with our 04 6psd... if I did, I'd probably try a new Purge Tank Cap first and see if it would go away...but, I'm not sure what your hearing. Maybe others that have had similar experiences will chime in...
Mine does that too. A ticking noise and hisses, as if drops of water were instantly vaporizing from contact with a hot surface. But I only notice it when the engine is really hot. Like the oil and coolant temps into the 220 range as I parked.
This summer was probably the hottest temps this particular car has seen.
I've gotten the oil temp above 250 when driving hard. And the coolant has been into the low 230 range.
I thought maybe my water pump weep hole was leaking or something. But I haven't noticed any change in my coolant level all summer. So I'm thinking it could be the noise of the water in the engine block gurgling around or something like that after the water pump/engine shuts off.

If I remember right, when I checked the udders to make sure that they were not clogged, the one for the AC dripped onto the exhaust manifold or pipe on the passenger side. I don't remember hearing a sound when it hit the hot metal, but, it evaporated immediately.

OK I'll bite, why on earth do you open your hood to let your motor cool down ??

After a run on a real hot day I do it too. Heat is hard on components like the battery, electrical and plastic parts. I figure it can't hurt to let that excess heat out of there. Learned it from drag racers.

Guess all those Corvette owners down South and in the Desert area's are in trouble then....

Not really, but they might wonder why their batteries don't last as long as they do in northern states.
Ever notice how plastic and rubber components under the hood degrade and crack after awhile? Heat contributes to that and without air flow, the engine compartment is like an oven after shut down.
I only do it after a long, hard run and the temp in the upper 90s.

Do you do it to your wifes Minivan or your pickup truck or just to the Corvette ?
Inquiring minds want to know
There seem to be a whole group of people who think that a Corvette is somehow different from every other car that comes off an assembly line.
Some wont drive them in the rain for fear of getting them wet
Some wont drive them if it's too cold out.
Some dont drive them if it's too hot out.
Some dont drive them at all for fear of wearing them out...
Some dont drive them until all lug nuts have been torqued since yesterdays drive...
Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
