Default Retractable license mount

Does anyone use a retractable front license plate?

The police in my area are writing a lot of tickets. It's just a "fix-it" ticket. In the past all you had to do was put the plate on and get it signed off by a cop. Then they started charging $25. Now they add some other costs and it's now about $100.

I was hoping to get a motorized version so I could keep it retracted until I had to display it.

The trouble is every one I've seen isn't really hidden. They are indeed folded under the bumper but even though they're flat, they stick down an inch or so and I still think too noticeable.

Are there any that are more hidden when retracted?

You don't give your state of residence. In Texas it's a crime to use a license plate hider, and a $200 ticket for no license plate.

Again, where do you live?

All the retractable plate holders I've seen are still visible when retracted under the fascia. Perhaps from a distance you wouldn't notice, but up close they are visible.

I know many do not think the front plate looks good on the car and I tend to agree, but if displaying one is the law in your state and you choose to ignore that, then be prepared to pay if stopped for a violation. Front license plates are required in my state and I run one on my car - I do not want to give an LEO a reason to stop me for something as silly as not running a front plate. And if you do use a retractable plate holder, have your license plate retracted, get stopped for not displaying the plate, and then pop the plate in place before the LEO gets to your car, I would bet if he sees you have a retractable holder he will issue the ticket anyway. Then you can explain it all to the judge.

It's not like the factory front plate holder on the C5 looks like that terrible one they tacked on the front of the C6.

Sorry for the rant, but some things just aren't worth the potential aggravation that they can cause. If the LEOs are issuing lots of tickets in your area, that would be a sign that some aggravation has a high probability of happening.

BTW, I do wish there was no front plate requirement here. To make the display of my front plate more acceptable in the looks department, I have painted the factory black license plate surround the body color and it does improve the look. Just something to consider.

I had one, on a Mustang. After about 12 months, the cables that operate the thing got all tangled, and it would not work any more. So- I wrote the distributor that sold it to me, AND the company. No response from either. Save yourself $100+ and a lot of aggravation- don't buy one. It is a POS, just my opinion.

I live in California. I got pulled over today but got lucky. I was wearing a hat that said veteran on it. He asked about my service and sent me on my way with no ticket.

I've given up on the idea of a retractable holder and I'm just going to mount the plate.

My car is red and I've seen one like mine with a black insert that covers the recessed area not covered by the plate. I can't seem to find one.

I haven't driven the car in a while and man was it fun!
