Default '98 clunking sound

My '98 convertible with 37,000 miles has developed a very annoying clunking sound that sounds like it's coming from under the front half of the car. I've replaced the sway bar bushings, checked every bolt, pounded, pulled, and pushed on every part front and back and cannot find anything loose. The car has not been lowered, and all the bushings appear to be in very good shape. The battery is tight, there is nothing in the trunk. The noise can be heard when going over small bumps in the road like a man hole cover etc. and seems to be more noticeable if only one of the front wheels is involved. My car has the F45 suspension but selecting different modes doesn't seem to have any effect. I would think that if I had bad shocks the noise would be continuous when ever I hit a bump but that is not the case, going over railroad tracks does not seem to trigger the noise. I've searched the Forum and checked all the things other members have suggested to no avail. What am I missing? Can anybody suggest a way to diagnose the problem?

Could it be the exhaust?
