I know none of y'all have ever dropped a socket into the belly pan under the battery when removing the battery. On the outside chance that someone has done this, is there an easy way to retrieve said socket? TIA -- Leroy

I recently dropped an Allen key into the rectangular tubing that the battery support pan is welded to. I used a long-handled wand magnet to retrieve it.

Not speaking from experience or anything, but there's a cover you can take loose under the fender on the back side of the tire if it's pretty far out of reach. Just sayin'.

Take the lower access panel behind the wheel off and you have access to the area under the battery. Not a hard job to do, but there is a screw that holds the panel on that is a bit hidden - it installs perpendicular to the frame rail.

Thanks all. I managed to retrieve it with a long magnet. I was worried that it had dropped down further and wouldn't be able to have reached it.

When I dropped a socket down there, I ended up removing the battery tray. I gave up on the magnet after several attempts and no idea of exactly where it went. I'm glad to see there is an easier way.

It only takes a 1/2" socket and an air rachet a couple of minutes to remove the battery tray. A couple of reasons why this method. Was going to use the magnet method but the tool I was looking for moved and I couldn't see it. My car is very low and the from above method would be easier than jacking the car up and I also think the side skirts might inhibit getting that panel underneath off. It happened recently to me too when installing a new battery.
