Thanks for all the input I think i'll get headers do i need to worry about cooking the starter?
It can't hurt to put a basic start heat shield. I wish I did...
I did get the headers coated figured it can't hurt...
Wish I would have wrapped the a/c line with something before I had put the header in the car! Now it's so tight of a clearance I can't get anything in there.... When I do the heads and cam I will wrap it then, I did slightly bend the a/c line at the manifold connection to get better placement of the a/c line...
Or if my starter goes out I will wrap it then since I will have to take the header loose from the head to install a starter which is pretty normal with a long tube header sys. I have the LG Super pro 1 7/8

having the headers coated definitely helps... I used a sheet of adhesive heatshield on my starter, just had to cut it out to fit the shape of the starter body/solenoid and it sticks on... I did use a few zip ties to keep it in place just in case the adhesive gave way over time, so far it has been holding up great... also wrap the wires to the starter while you are there... you might consider replacing the starter with the newer design that uses 2 long bolts... personally I recommend the bosch sr8581n, it can be had for a little over $100 and has been a great starter in my experience... if you have never heard of the older style starters breaking the ear off the block you should look into that, pretty nasty injury that it can do to a perfectly good block so that's why I didn't mind spending a little money for peace of mind

i have been running lg super pro's for prob 3 years now...i did not wrap my headers in any coating..nor do i have heat shields on my spark plug wires...and don't have anything around my starter...my plug wires still look and feel brand new, as does everything else...prob have close to 17k on the headers as well..one thing i always do is once i get home i always pop the hood to let heat out ..oh and i am supercharged too..not that add much heat but it does add a little
You didn't mention what headers you are buying, but I installed LG streets several years ago and have tens of thousands of miles on them. I did nothing else but install them, no heat protection additions anywhere. I have had no heat related problems anywhere. Plug wires have been fine and I still have my original starter with 141,000 miles on my car and it starts great. The LG headers are polished stainless with no heat coating. They have been completely trouble-free.
