So I know this topic has been beaten to death, but I'm putting one on my Christmas list and I really want to know how short the throw of the Hinson is. Is it too short? I know some prefer it to the MGW. I am torn. Any help is appreciated.

I installed a MGW in my 2004 about 3 months ago and have another brand in my 2001 - not sure what brand in the 2001. The MGW is by far the better shifter! Not sure if this solves your dilemma.
I have the MGW and at first found it to be too short for my liking. I adjusted it to be a little longer (it's threaded, and you don't have to screw it down all the way) and am happier with it a little longer. That way it requires less force to execute the shifts. It is noticeably smoother and more precise than the stock shifter.
There was a thread not too long ago where people were asked to identify their least favorite mod and one fellow said it was his MGW shifter --- not because it wasn't OK, but because he didn't think it was any better than the C6 shifter that he had installed previously.
A new shifter is not going to give you a totally new driving experience. There are limits posed by the transmission that a shifter can't overcome.
Overall I'd say that my MGW shifter is nice and I'm glad I have it, but the C6 shifter might have been just as good for a little less money.
Not knocking anyone's shifter, and can only comment on the one I installed in my 98. I bought a new Core shifter from a forum member that went to a billet hurst before installing it. detachable handle, and shifts very precisely and don't know how but has a nice click feeling when going into gear. for the money 200% better than the stocker I had
Replaced my stock shifter with the Hinson shifter, very happy! Can't tell you how it compares to the MGW, since I haven't had one. Precise shifts, can't miss third and short throw. It is stiff at first but loosens up, I've put about 600 miles on mine and is not as stiff as when new.
