Some malfunctions will cause a spontaneous display on the DIC, but many don't, and will just save a current or history code in the computer. The history codes are automatically cleared after 40-50 ignition cycles, if there's no recurrence of the problem.
You can view the diagnostic codes for your car (if any) by :
Turning on the ignition (engine may be running or not)
Press and HOLD Options, while pressing Fuel 4 times within 10 seconds
Watch the DIC. It will cycle thru each module, showing any codes that exist, or saying 'No Codes' if none exist. Current problems are labeled with a 'C' and history codes are labelled with an 'H'. After the last module, it will say 'No More Codes' and go into manual mode. To exit diagnostics, either turn off the ignition or press the 'E/M' button.
While in manual mode, you can use the buttons on the dash to navigate from module to module, and from code to code. If you position yourself on a code, you can clear it by pressing and holding 'Reset'. I don't remember offhand which buttons are used for this navigation (I keep a cheat sheet in the console).
