Default '01 vert trunk weak opening

Now that I have all the door lock issues fixed I still have an issue with the opening of the trunk lid. It unlocks at the push of a button, but it will barely open. Maybe an 1/8 of an inch. If I give it a bump with the palm of my hand it will recoil up a little. The best way to open is to open and close a side door. Air pressure will really make it jump up! Are the nitrogen struts failing? Or is there a spring I don't see or missing altogether?

Pretty common, my car did it since nearly new. Fix here but over time if you don't keep the weather strip somewhat lubricated it'll stick to the lid and cause that issue also.

I put a spring under a screw next to the latch, pops it right up. There is at least one "kit" for that from several vendors, but if you take a peek at it you could probably grab a healthy enough spring from Ace or the like. Mine is about 1/2" x 1" fairly stiff. Oh, someone also suggested cleaning the slider... Didn't help mine.

Best regards,

Actually, if you look a little closer, that thing's no longer available there. BUT, from the picture, you can see clearly how to make it with a spring from a hardware store for about 35¢ and a 10¢ rubber bumper. That's a LOT better than the $15.99 price. Just copy the picture & take it to the store & tell 'em you need to make one of those. The Helpful Hardware Man (or woman) will put it together for you in a jiffy. You might need a Torx wrench if you don't have a set handy... I forget what number (size) it is. OH, the edge of the spring just sits under the edge of the screw, it'll look best if you center the screw, then put the bumper over the spring.

Best regards,
...z

"Trunk Popper" 11 bucks and free shipping on ebay. Or you could spend some time at the hardware store picking up a spring that might work. They should have come from the factory with these springs installed.

First thing you should do is spray wd40 on the struts, and latch.
Operate it a few times to give the wd40 time to work it's way into the cylinders.
This worked for me, and it's been over a year since I sprayed them.
The trunk lifts up about an inch when I either press the button on the dash, or the one on the remote.

Bob.

I had the same problem with the trunk not opening enough, on my 2001 vette, to get your fingers under the trunk lid. I first installed the spring located next to the trunk latch. This helped, but still did not pop the trunk as I would have liked. I then ordered a set of new struts. After that the trunk pops up about an inch or more when the trunk release is activated. I purchased both the spring and struts from Ecklers, but I see them available from other Corvette parts catalogs as well..

IF in the car, pop the lid, with the windows closed and the top up, when you close the door, the positive air pressure from the door being shut will pop the trunk lid open. price FREE.

.............. and if you are not in the car you could grow your fingernails really long to get under the trunk to lift it up. Free too. I prefer to have things work the way they are supposed to. The spring corrects a design flaw.

OR open and shut a door. and if it worked the way it was supposed to, this would not be a issue.
also I noticed the other day I noticed the trunk lid notice when driving, the light came on after driving about a mile, the spring would immediately trigger the warning. I just don't like adding the extra weight of a spring to my car, and not to mention the spring looks like something my girls hair could get caught in, in the right conditions.

The spring weighs only a few grams and has worked flawlessly for the last 4 years. It is a cheap easy fix and does not cause any problems. Do you regularly keep a girl in your trunk ?

Girls in the trunk? well yes I have, but that was during spring break, when I used to work for MTV's film crew.
