I dyno'd again today with 1100 miles. I've gone up to 355 hp and 344 tq. This is up from stock 346 and 339 tq. Of course I only had 600 miles then. So who's to say if my HP was from the intake or being more broke in.

Might also be that you have gone WOT a few more times now that it is past the first break in period. The engine should gain a couple horses as it breaks in. Your baseline numbers were good though. I did 347.0 rwhp with the stock air box and the original (slightly dirty) filter with 7000 miles on mine.

I'm thinking of trying the tie wrap idea but the hole is so much bigger to begin with in the 02/03 air box that we will not see as big a gain as an 01 Z06 would. The trouble with buying a factory car that has already been very much tuned...harder to get big gains from basic mods... Oh well, I'll live. Thanks for the good data.

Was this new run done on the same dyno as the first run?

Yes, on the same dyno. I'm going to do it again at 5K.

I have seen several Drag strip comparison tests
with ram air / cold air induction. I would say the avg mph gain
in the qtr is 2-3 mph. I don't see how anyone could dispute fresh cold air
to the intake vs under the hood hot air not being a factor.

that is FACT :yesnod:

I want to thank Tom Steele for posting this. I took a lot of fluid dynamics courses in college, and I looked into "Ram Air" when I heard about it on cars, only to discover it doesn't exist on cars. There is no effect where air is "pushed" into the intake creating more horsepower (as has been stated).

There is a benefit to cooler air. I would really like to see a test where air intake temps are measured on a stock vehicle and then one with a "cold air induction" kit. People see a 2-3RWHP difference and immediately proclaim that the "ram air effect" that can't be seen on the dyno is what gave them 2-3mph. In reality, it was probably a combination of the cooler air, as well as the gains in power *ACROSS* the powerband. How many people integrate their power curve to find out the true amount of added power (area under the curve) they got from a mod, rather then the peak numbers they saw on a dyno.

I would bet the mph on a stock 03 Z06 with ram air would be
higher than a stock Z06 with exhaust, especially on a hot day.
Keep in mind that the people on this forum that usually dispute the value of the cold air systems are keyboard mechanics and racers.

They don't test the parts and they don't race.

I'll race you if you pull up next to me! ;)

I'm sure you weren't talking about me though, because I wasn't disputing CAI - I was disputing "ram-air."

I don't know how much power it makes but it does work and is better than the stock piece with the filter tie-strapped to it. How do I know? Well I ran a 11.885@114.53 with a 1.698 60ft( stock set-up filter tie strapped). The mph was off by about 2-the right lane at that rack always has a slower mph for some reason or another. Last weekend I ran a 11.711@117.20 with the Vortex( stock power duct) with a 1.691 sixty foot. I have never had the car on a dyno and i am guessing that the dyno will show little to no improvement. Keep it it works.
