I did a chrome V.S. Black comparison
#142
I recently found myself in a position to buy a new C7...The main criteria was: Z51/2LT in red, with black interior, red calipers, automatic,... WITH "CHROME WHEELS" seems pretty reasonable, right...? 😕
WRONG...!😖
I shopped the 2 largest corvette dealers in the country, in NJ & NH, searched online and viewed every one of their over 500 corvettes in those inventories, and what I found was, 99% of all the cars in stock, ALL had "painted black wheels, carbon flash mirrors, spoiler and emblems" I was only able to find ONE car out of 500 with chrome wheels, and those other options. "ONE CAR...!!!"😳
Sure, I could have special ordered my car, and not get the best pricing, because after all, what I was looking for was such an "unusual rare optioned car" 😒 But why should I pay thousands more, just because I didn't want black wheels...??
Now I get the whole black wheel thing, I think it looks great on come colors, for some people, but there should be some variety on the lot for those of us, (and apparently there are a lot of us who prefer the chrome) who don't like the "Black out look". What should have been a "fun search" for what I thought was going to be an "easy find", turned into a 2 week long quest to go through almost every car in the northeast inventories to finally find "my car"...!👍
And I must say, I did get "a great deal" at MacMulkin"... Just wish I had more to choose from.
Just sayin...

As far as the dealers go...they're gonna stock based on supply and demand, and for this time period, the demand for black wheels is higher than that of chrome.

Could have just purchased one with black wheels, then just bought a set of chrome wheels for under a grand, then sold the black wheels to recoup most of that! Just sayin!

Well for me anyway! I would never ever put on wheels of any color or type that do not exceed the factory take offs in quality, that's why my thin spokes will stay until I can afford some good forged polished wheels!

1. Chrome wheels are more true to the traditional appeal of the Corvette.
- Traditional is not always good. Adapt to the times or get left behind!
2. There are more chrome wheels to choose from now for a “unique” look.
- 90% of those are god awful and cheaply made and just plain gaudy!
3. Everyone else is doing black wheels.
- Which is why you should too :P
4. Unless the Corvette is all black, black wheels can distract from the car’s overall design.
- IMO...black wheels look great on the following colors - Black, Shark Gray, Yellow, Blade Silver and especially White and Red! I will admit chrome looks better on most of the other colors.(i.e. DSOM, both blues, and that dark green)
5. Subtlety has its perks.
- WHAT THE HECK IS SUBTLE ABOUT CHROME?!?!?!?!!
6. Black wheels don’t convey any of the luxury appeal of the Corvette.
- This is where that "subtlety has its perks" would come in for black wheels!
7. Chrome wheels have more staying power.
- Guess time will tell. I personally like black wheels. But I also like other finishes as well. There are so many options to choose from these days that are better looking and more original than chrome. Gunmetal, bronze, matte black, gloss black, anthrecite, carbon fiber, 2-tones, paint to match....the options are endless. But in the end, it's all simply about what floats the boat of the driver and beauty is in the eye of the beholder...therefore this whole "One is better than the other" debate is completely pointless!!!

Pretty sure most people buying a new c7 that want chrome are not going to be happy with under 1k wheels. Maybe 1k each!
Well for me anyway! I would never ever put on wheels of any color or type that do not exceed the factory take offs in quality, that's why my thin spokes will stay until I can afford some good forged polished wheels!

Actually, you can buy a set of 4 factory OEM wheels for anywhere between 1000 and 1500. I've seen them on this site many times for sale. There's a couple sets for sale now in the C7 for sale section. Heck, you can even buy them direct from GM for about $500/wheel. The factory wheels are NOT worth $1000 ea. I was just stating that if he wanted all those options plus chrome wheels, but had trouble finding that exact car...he could have just bought one with black wheels then purchased the stock chrome ones separate and sell the black ones.

Just an idea...or a suggestion...how about going with a black chrome finish for a set of wheels? Don't see that often and it's a pretty cool look.

I have been thinking about that,it is expensive to have done, have to do some research on doing it myself. But if one did that(go both ways) what would all these guys say THEN !!!!!!

Gotta admit that black chrome looks pretty cool. Had a set of black chrome pipes on my Harley many years ago and they were way cool!
However, Pounder, we're still talkin' black wheels!! Very un-cool!!!!
