Not a dumb question. On cars built before mid model year 2003, the fuel filter is located on the inside edge of the frame rail just forward of the left rear wheel.
There were two different fuel filters made for those years. If the fuel rail covers in the engine compartment have TWO fuel lines coming out of the cover on the drivers side of the engine, your car requires this filter:

If there is just a single fuel line coming out of the fuel rail covers then the car needs this, more expensive, fuel filter:

Either one should be available at most local parts stores and probably for fewer $$$ than in the links I provided. The links were just so you had pictures of the different parts...
