When it's happened to me (which it has twice in 15 years) I just call my insurance carrier and they come out and open the door for me. Personally, I wouldn't hide a operational key, in effect, if I hid one it would be without a pellet, that way anyone who found it could open the door but not start the engine.
I know this didn't answer your question, but I hope it helps.
I keep a non chip key in my wallet so I can get into the car. After leaving the keys in cars, not once, not twice, but three times I finally learned my lesson.
If I would want to hide anything on my Corvette it would be in one of the coves...use some 3M two sided tape to tape your little box to the interior wall of the cove. There is lots of room even for a mickey if one wanted...lol.
Every gone in the trunk, put the keys down then without any brain function, close the truck?
No. Not yet.
I did lock my keys in a car 35 years ago. From that moment on I made it a point to always use the key to lock my car and not lock the door from the inside and then shut it. Haven't locked the keys in the trunk yet. When we travel, my wife keeps the extra key fob in her purse in case I lose mine. I try to be careful because I am getting up there and I do seem to do a lot more dumb things.

I've managed to walk away after using the fob to lockup and then decide, "Gee I don't need my jacket". Pop the back of the coupe, proceed to automatically place the keys in the jacket, place the jacket in the back and shut the back. Now - I have a lock vette with the keys safely tucked away in the pocket of my jacket.
Check out the Drone alarm/remote start system. It integrates with an app on your smartphone, and you don't have to worry about this.
Leaving your car for service? Lock the keys inside. When they get to your car, they call you and you unlock it for them. Same thing if you are having someone pick the car up for you; and best part, it tracks the car on the map, and keep check on speeds with a "tattle-tale" feature.
I have it on my C5, and one of my trucks. On the truck, I have the alarm hooked up to the train horns; and I have a bunch of ways I can set/arm the system, including remote start. I do not have the remote start on my C5; I don't need it, nor did I want it on a 6-speed.
