I have a '99 automatic and no mods to the engine. The box was apparently rebuilt about 4 years ago and has about 12k on it since the rebuild. At WOT the car hits the rev limiter in 1st gear for about 1/2 a second before changing into second gear and I presume this is not what should be happening. Any ideas on how I could fix this irritating issue?
Based on personal experience, it sounds like you might be low on fluid in the transmission, similar to what Chuck was suggesting. The procedure for filling the transmission is very specific in that the fluid has to be within a specific temp range at the time of fill or you will end up with the wrong fluid level. The 4L60E is very sensitive to this and is easily burnt up, trust me I know. When I was dealing with issues myself, I was seeing that the car did not want to shift at WOT and the problem rapidly progressed until I lost 3 and 4. Turned out, I was low 2 quarts due to improper fill procedures and that led to a full rebuild.
Anyways, good luck with everything. Hope you get it sorted because it is no fun having a car that won't shift when you are on it!
Not sure if this applies to you but I had the same issue more or less on a C5 I purchased a couple months back. The last owner had it 12 years but apparently babied it enough he never experienced it. The dealer checked fluid and electrics and all was good. They re-flashed the car and the problem disappeared. Now all normal...
The A4 transmission has a very specific fluid check and fill procedure. If not followed to the letter, your transmission could suffer permanent damage.
The fluid level has to be CHECKED & REFILLED when the engine is running. If the engine is OFF, approx. 3-4 quarts of fluid will GUSH out of the fill port.

Chuck will do wonders for your trans tuning!

Bill and Chuck are both spot on about this matter! Now if only someone could post a link to the proper fill procedure....
