Have read a few ads and heard different storys about stick vs auto trannys, don't know why but am getting the idea manuals go out faster than autos, I know your gonna say it all depends on up-keep or driving habits and that's a good point, however am guessing autos go further than manuals but cost more to fix or replace.
So lets assume one or the other goes out, whats an approximent price for replacing a clutch opposed to replacing an automatic tranny???
Stick all the way in a Corvette. Auto tranny will cost a LOT more than a clutch to fix/replace. I have an automatic 400+hp daily driver, and I use it in "manual-mode" during any spirited driving. My Corvette is a 6spd and I wouldn't have it any other way!

It took me 3 months to find my manual C5, but a lot of it had to do with color. I refused to compromise, so many black Corvettes out there.
This was the exact same problem I had. I wanted a six speed, but it also had to be a specific color with options I desired. I did find it, but it took nearly two years. I was not willing to compromise.
Not only was I looking at the six speed from a performance stand point but also from an ownership one. If you look at the ratio of six speeds produced compared to automatics, it's fairly low for each year of production. I don't have the exact figures in front of me, but the variances in manual option production figures are something like as high as 32% of cars and get as low as into the twenty percentile some years. The FRC and Z06 helped to increase the ratio since they both could only be had with a manual.
A lot of younger buyers that are entering the C5 market really want a manual (unless they can't drive one). The recent "WTB" threads give a good idea of this. However with there being a fairly low amount of manual cars made, combined with usage attrition (accidents or usage as race cars), it's gradually eliminating manual transmission cars further.
Obviously there will always be definitive manual cars like the FRC or Z06 but an interesting manual transmission buy could prove to be a valuable car down the road. Think something like Medium Purple Metallic or Fairway Green Metallic, as a convertible, with a six speed. That sort of thing has to be fairly difficult to find.
Imho, a sports car without a stick isn't a sports car. I made the mistake years ago of buying an auto Vette so my wife would handle it, and I hated it. Turns out she didn't like it driving it anyway, so I got rid of it. Now, that I got a stick, and a convertible, I can ever imagine not having both.
4L60e is garbage and doesn't belong in a Corvette.
6 speed manual vs torque converter automatic is no contest. Manual every single time. If talking about a single or dual clutch transmission, the choice becomes a little tougher.
As you already stated, forum members would point out that type of use and maintenance makes all the difference in the world in either type of tranny. As far as choice, it really is a personal thing, there is no good or bad in my opinion. Personally, I love having the driver involvement that manual gives you and would not ever buy a performance car with an automatic, but thats just me. I have friends who feel just as strongly on the flip side! Best wishes to you!

I agree with this, if I was going to build a drag only car then I would do an auto but for a street car there is no way I would get an auto or convert mine, 6 speed all the way
I don't care if an auto is faster than a stick in certain configurations. A manual tranny sports car is always going to be +100 on the involvement factor.........
When I bought my Monte SS new in 08, I had not had a car like that for a long time (mostly trucks) and then I just had the uncontrollable desire to have a stick car again and it had to be a Vette !!! I have said it on this forum before, I like being in the gear I want when I want and for as long as I want !!!!!!!! ( and that's a lot of wanting)
Wife couldn't master a manual transmission . . .I even bought her a VW to learn on . . .sold the Beetle . . .all subsequent Vettes are auto... cost and maintenance arguments are BS . . it's all about what suits your wife-style.
thanx for all the input , now does anyone here have an idea what A/T repairs are opposed to clutch replacement, just a general idea will be fine..... thanx
