Default targa tops

just purchased 99 coupe with 10,000 miles, always inside. This car was purchased new the transparent blue roof panel, car is blue looks ok. I am thinking ( I should not do that) about looking for a solid normal roof panel and have it painted to match my car. I am not a fan of transparent roofs, my questions are two fold: do the C5 coupes use the same panel thru all years, and what are views regarding resale, thanks for your thoughts...Doug GM UAW

Look on the parts forum and post a "want to buy" ad.

First off, yes, all the targa tops from '97-04 are the same so any year will work. There may need to be some slight adjustments made for a snug fit though.

Normally more value is given per the pricing guides for the transparent roof since it was an extra cost option. However, having the dual roof panels would be a plus IMO, especially in those locales that have really hot weather in the summer and moderate weather in the spring and fall.

they are the same....you will need to adjust the top you buy to fit....its easy just takes a little time to get it just right so its not too tight or too loose.

That being said I have a top for sale from a 2004...it is Mil Yellow and has airbrushing on the inside which you could replace that piece since you are painting anyway....I am in Florida so depending on where you are shipping done right can add some $$$$ to the price. I know what happens when someone does a halfass job of packing and these tops break easily.

My advice is to find a good one locally if possible...I know it sounds like I am talking you out of the one I have but local will save you money

if you are at all interested in the one I have let me know

If a forum member had one for sale it may help if you posted your general location.

I did the same thing you are planning to do. I will use. and keep. both tops.

I suggest that, given that you will in all likelihood be refinishing it, you do NOT confine your search to perfect tops. I bought one locally here that had kited off of a car for about $100 and then the refinishing was $300. It is totally perfect.

As an aside I did this for 2 reasons. First is the solar but second is that I was looking to quiet down the interior. Biggest single thing I did to reduce interior noise.

there are adjustments where it attaches to the windshield, you can also adjust the rear catch....if you look at the top and the attachment points its pretty obvious....you can also Google the info

it is trial and error to get it where you want it...you can also adjust the side clips for windnoise

Honestly, the top fits pretty good what I'm having an issue with is the window sometimes hit the tab on the side of the targa top and doesn't close, rides up on the tab. But if i close the door with the window down a little then roll up the window it's fine.
Thanks for any help.

I'd love to find a paintable one to replace my clear one. Any idea what they usually go for?

For starters let me say I almost didn't buy my car because of the clear top. It was at the dealer, just traded, not detailed and sitting outside with the windows up with black interior on a 95 degree day. It was unbelievably hot on the test drive.

Blah, blah, fast forward. I bought the "fake" roof insert (not the cheesy film) and I keep that installed from late June to September. Occasionally I'll take it out when we're on a night ride with a beautiful sky. When installed, it really does feel and look like a standard header.

I had to trim the plastic frame around it to get it just perfect. From the outside you can't tell it's not original. Absolutely no need to spend that money, but you have to like the look.

To me solid cover tops to match the body color reminds me of the FRCs from 99-00.

Love the see thru targa!!

Op, I, long story, over-bought, an extra top this week. In fact, the blue one is not even to me yet. Won't be in my hands until Friday. It is supposed to be Electron blue. Which blue are you looking for? This top is supposed to be 9.5 out of 10. Been in the original bag since the car was purchased. I won't be able to judge that until I get my hands on it though. Let me know if you're interested. I'll let it go for exactly what I have in it.

The body color tops are getting harder to find. Last summer I paid $800 on an auction site and another $600 to have it repainted to match. In hindsight I may have been screwed but I'm quite happy with the final result.

My 98 had the lexan top when I got it . Someone had painted it to look like carbon fiber ( poor attempt ) . I had it painted black , looks great about 125$ . Bought a regular top that had been dropped and the front edge had cracks 50$ . Having it repaired and painted Torch Red to match body color . Will probably cost around 140$ . If I decide I don't like the red on the car I may sell it , but that could be a couple months .

good ones are about $400 and up....depends on how desperate you are and what you are willing to pay to get a specific color I guess

as I said I have a Mil Yellow one I need to sell.....but shipping from Florida to OK won't be cheap...

As I said; I found mine for $100 and it was $300 for a high quality paint job.
I also found a damaged clear one for $40.

Both local to me so no shipping.
