Finding codes through the DIC is a great feature of our cars !!!! Did any of you know that Cadillac had this feature in the 80's ???? On the AC panel you hit off and warmer with the key in the on position !!!!

It is great that you can access the trouble codes on the C5 - that's not the case on the C6 or C7. Didn't know that about the Caddy though - never owned one.

I didn't know that, but I had a crx that you could check the codes. There was a red led in the computer that would flash Morse like codes. Wasn't as easy as the c5.

Jeeps in the late 1990s allowed the DTC to be shown on the digital odometer after turning on and off the ignition key three times in 5 seconds of time.

My 97 Jeep Wrangler will give me a trouble code that way. No scanner is necessary.

Other 1990s makes will give an "check engine" light flash that does the same thing.

most of the cars 1980 and newer could flash the check engine light to give you codes, then it's did it blink 3 or 4 times ???? Having the code number is a whole different deal !!!!!

My Jeep gives the DTC in digital numbers--after the odometer reading disappears during the test. Started in 1997 model year when the Jeeps went to electric odometers.

Yeah, BMW's in the 80's (3 series for sure) had what is known as the "stomp test" where you stomp the gas pedal a certain number of times at a specific time and the check engine would flash the code. Not the most user friendly but pretty cool considering the year.

I had a Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V (2006) where you could do the "pedal dance" (press the fly by wire accelerator in a sequence), and it would spit out the code by flashing the CEL a number of times for each of the 4 digits. Lots of nights spend counting the blinks, and saying, "was that 8 blinks, or 9?"

My 1980 Cadillac Seville D'Elegante ( the stage coach trunk ) had that feature. 27,000 dollars back in 1980. It also came with a Factory CB radio, that would turn down the radio when receiving a transmission, the squelch could be set to any level of RF response.. Back in the 80's, it was a lot of car. Had and flip top console with a desk top writing pad, and pen. Just a little more CTI

GM frequently introduced advanced features on Cadillacs - lower volume production cars and generally owned by owners that had the majority of services performed at the dealer service department. If it worked on Cadillacs it might get rolled out to other vehicles.....Cadillac was a great place to "field test" new ideas.

HUD first appeared on the Pontiac Bonneville SSEi - another low volume car.
