Default The C-5 restoration project or what the heck was I thinking.

Just took delivery on my new C5. I say my new but there is not telling what this girl has gone through. There are stickers all over her. Front bumper cover, front right fender and passenger door are kaput. Looks like somebody went mud bogging. All the trimmings underneath are in bad shape. All electrical dodaddies work and she doesn't throw any codes. Motor starts, runs and shuts off. All the gears engage and she pulls her weight. No smoke. Got her cheap. Probably paid to much.

The specifics are as follows; 2000. manual tranny. Removable top. Varam (?) intake. Everything else appears stock. 70,000K miles. Mostly silver once you scrape the dirt off.

Short term. Get her road worthy. Mid term avoid divorce. Long term I have no idea.

Will include pics as I go along.

Congrats on getting a C5 and best of luck getting it in shape. If you've got any questions as you go along, post them up - plenty of knowledgeable people here on the forum that will help.

Pictures? I need to build something to help me get mine on the lift. Currently too low to get the arms under it.

I'm just curious as to whether it actually has 70,000,000 miles on it or not. Seems it would be a new record.

Got 2 1" by 8" boards at Lowes. Cut them with my chain saw and screwed them together. If you don't have a saw they will cut the boards for you.

Drive up on your ramps then raise the vehicle with a floor jack. Some use a hockey puck on the jack. I just use a piece of wood. Put some jack stands under the frame and then put some blocks under the car if it falls off the stands. I use the wheels. Make sure you set your emergency brake, put the trans in park or low gear and chaulk your wheels front and back that you do not raise. This stuff can be dangerous.

To avoid damage it's best to use recommended jacking points.

Thanks Jack! I have already learned alot from the forum.

Haven't got a lot done this weekend with the car. Been huntin mostly. Had a jake about 10 yards away but let him pass. The muzzleloader will have to wait.

Did get the spark plugs out. Looked like oem. Electrodes pretty worn but were uniform. No abnormal staining, fouling or deposits. Put in AC delco factory recommended replacements. Ordered some MSD wires to replace the oem. Might check the ohms on the surviving 6 original wires and the MSD's.

Pulled the vararam air filter. Not overly fond of those types of filters. Factory boxes usually more than adequate. Guess I will keep it as I don't want to spend the money.

Will check out the transmission and rear-end this week. Might load it up and have my mechanic give me his opinion on the motor.

Went through the on-board code reader again. Nothing there. Pulled the damaged body panels. No structural damage. Everything still looks good. Will get on the net and find replacements unless I can find a major malfunction.

Interested to see what the AHS status is. Lotsa folks have trouble with that. Guess I can live without it.
