I know this is not a C 5 and moderators can do what they will with it. I just thought of it as a tribute to one of the best Minds on this Forum, Bill Curlee !!!!! Stuff I didn't have a clue about ??? I don't know how much time Bill spends on board (if any ??) Living and or working on one must make a C 5 child's play !!!

I served my ROTC senior summer on the Picuda which was a WWII sub which was victorious against the Japanese in the Pacific. Great time out of Key West on tropical working hours. Nothing like the newer nukes.

I made 3 deployments on a Los Angeles class SSN. It was hard work but a very rewarding job. I remember the CO telling a VIP group that a nuclear powered submarine has more parts than the space shuttle.

Thanks pounder... your right Mr Curlee, dadaroo, ET, and more are VERY sharp guys... another VERY sharp guy was a sacker at the grocery store...he's always in the tech forum, and I would trust him more with my corvette than any dealership tech ...

THANK YOU! There are NUMEROUS guys on here that are EX BUBBLE HEADS (SUBMARINERS) and or Military Members/retirees.
I did 26 years in the Navy. All of it was Submarine oriented. I served on three Lafayette Class SSBNs (BOOMERS); USS Alexander Hamilton (SSBN-617), USS Sam Rayburn (SSBN-635) and USS Woodrow Wilson (SSBN-624) My last submarine was a Los Angles Class Fast Attack, USS Miami (SSN-755) (before the fire)
You would think that being on a Sub is like living in a SARDINE CAN but its not really. YES, Space is limited but, its bigger than "most" of the airliners that you fly in. The time away from home and family is the worst part of military life..
I retired in January 2001 and now work on all those submarines that are assigned to Groton CT Navy Base. The USS Missouri, SSN-780 is a Virginia Class Submarine and one of my Subs. Its an excellent ship.
Did you know that there are a LOT more airplanes in the ocean than there are submarines in the air??
SILENT SERVICE! There are only two types of ships in the world: SUBMARINES and TARGETS!

I took my girls aboard a boomer quite a few years ago....they still talk about it. Bunks near torpedos, very little space and the smallest kitchen I've ever seen. It was a very neet experience.

Well since this thread is what it is......
My son joined the US Navy and will be going into the nuclear program. He says they call those particular sailors "NUKES". Which from my understanding, he'll be stationed on an aircraft carrier or a submarine after his training. He's telling me he wants to volunteer for sub duty !!
He is going in with 3.5 years of college under his belt and all I asked of him is to finish his degree while he's in the Navy !
