I really need mine in as I hear that lock every time and makes me nervous. However I am trying to find a time when I can have two sets of eyes and preferably during business hours as it seems that the install can go smoothly but some have had issues. I would like to have Richard available just in case....
RoninC5,
You better get that lock taken care of, you don't want to get stranded with that nice RED Z06.
I just ordered an LMC5 kit for a Corvette C5 I've owned less than a week. I've heard and read that this is a "MUST DO" update item to any C5 vette. So, why take the chance.
Just completed it.. Not the most fun/comfortable excercise but even a bone head like me can do it apparently. No codes on a few starts. I should check as a code or two on a battery disconnect is expected but no new codes and no column lock... One bit of advice- know your radio security code before you start....

I just received my kit today. Going through the instructions now.
The C5 radio had a "theft lock" feature that an owner could enable. The idea is that if the radio were stolen it would have to first be disconnected from its power.
If theft lock were enabled then when the radio lost power (stolen, dead battery, disconnect the battery etc) the radio requires the theft lock password (determined by the person that enabled the feature) to be useable again once repowered. No password and the radio doesn't play again.
You only have to worry about the theft lock password if the feature is enabled. To determine if it is enabled on your car look for the tiny LED at about the 1 o'clock position above the volume dial. With the engine off and key out of the ignition if the LED is flashing then Thef Lock is enabled. If the LED is NOT illuminated you have nothing to worry about.
There is a procedure that can be followed if theft lock is enabled and you do not have the password.
Excellent description. I will check it out before installing the LMC5 device on my car. I am glad I learned about and received the LMC5 device before getting the dreaded column lock fault.

Thanks- I thought that was an auto feature and there was no disable. Now I know what that red LED means. After the install, my radio just displayed "SEC". Also getting the code in is not exactly intuitive either. I used the min/hour function and am/fm as "enter". Then all worked fine. I'm sure it's in the manual but what fun is that? The cool thing it's in - it's working - and I did it so I know a bit more about my car. I missed a step and did not pull the relay but I'll do that later as follow up. Also, I made sure Richard was available- just in case....
Richard is one of the best guys you will meet, makes the best product and we have been selling them for years. If you need one we have them in stock ready to go!
Installed the LMC5 device this afternoon. Very straight forward and simple. The hardest part of the job was getting one of the pins out of the large connector. I called the guys at Compliance Parts and they walked me through possible solutions to my issue. Installation is successful.
My factory radio had not been coded, so I did not have to put in the pass code. Who wants a 1999 GM radio now days anyway. I will leave the radio un-coded.
No more worries about the dreaded column lock and 2MPH issue. YAHOO!!!
Congrats...gpruitt... BTW, I threw 2 BCM codes after install. I did not write them down as I figured it was routine after an install process involving the unit. I cleared them and will update should they show back up. My guess is that's normal and they are history..
I installed mine last night. The install itself went pretty well, had a problem removing the first orange wire, just used a slight larger allen key to remove it.
Got everything buttoned up (so I thought). Started the car, no messages on the DIC but the column was locked. This was not anticipated as the column was not locked when I started the procedure, I did check it before starting the install.
Once again Richard to the rescue, turns out I did not pay enough attention to step2a ( removing the relay ) when performing the install.
Richard took the time to explain how the system works and provided me a work round.
As already stated on many occasions Richard is a very knowledgeable guy, great demeanor and really cares about his customers. We need more Richards in the world.

Hmm That's interesting about the relay. Wonder if it was timing related.. I forgot the relay part altogether but all works fine. I should go pull it but no locking and no codes. And I don't hear that dang zzzzclang sound of the plate/pin or whatever locking/unlocking....I thinking (in my case at least) if it works great, don't mess with it...
I did not touch any relays during my install just yesterday and all seems fine. I had an issue getting one of the pins out. I called Compliance Parts. They asked questions to check that I had not not missed anything. They did not ask if I did anything to the relay. My column never locked, even before installing the LMC5 module. Is removing the repay a necessary step or, is that step related on year and equipment on the car?

Well first check and see if you even have the relay.. Not a given on your 99. I have an 02, did not remove the relay and all is well. Chances are your car had the recall done I suspect (like my 99) and the wheel turns with key out of ignition. When in doubt, Richard is your best go to guy. I'm gonna pull it next time I get the chance but only because IF it fails , it will cause an error. My car is very low mileage so I'm not really worried about the number of relay cycles......

Well my 99 worked just fine and my 02 I left it in! Just kidding, if it's there and you do the LMC5, removing it seems to be the best course of action....
Mine is a 00'. There does not seem to be a one size fits all. I think each may have their subtle differences. For example, I was getting the Service Column Lock message but never got the pull key and wait 10 seconds. Nor did I ever get locked out.
I would suggest following the instructions, they are there for a reason. But to each their own I guess.
