Pop the intake manifold off (SUPER easy to do on the LS1) then hit it with degreaser and a hose. That'll get all the caked on gunk out of the crevices.
Basically I did the following:
1) picked out all the dried leafs and maple tree propellers by hand where I can see them.
2) Then took a shop vac with a narrow end to get things I couldn't reach.
3) Then took a leaf blower to the whole thing to get anything else out.
4) Next was to start washing - but I was too scared to put the garden hose to it so I just wiped everything down with soap and water.
5) Then I took the leaf blower to it again to dry everything.
6) finished it off with "tire wet", which worked pretty well actually.
* I wish I could have taken the hose to it though. Would have saved me hours and I would have gotten to little crevices and deep areas I couldn't reach with my hands, but with all of the touchy electrical problems I keep reading about (and the fact my car has none of them at the moment) I decided to play it safe.
Ah..the beautiful black color. Gotta take those photos really fast after a wash and wax. I have a black one also. By my estimate you have about 10 minutes to get the photos before it starts showing dust, pollen and dirt.
BTW.....I have a large compressor in my garage. I use a blower attachment to blow out stuff from the small spaces. You don't need a big compressor to do this. A small portable one will work. Great to have for keeping tires filled as well as other things.

Wow, you guys are so awesome, thank you so much! Yes, there is a price to pay with black -- but I wouldn't have it any other way. Love my car! C5 in black is just down right sexy!
