While they look ok on some cars, I really can't stand getting behind cars with black taillights in traffic. When the sun is out, they're very hard to see. If you get in front of someone not paying attention, it would be a good way to get rear ended.

I'd recommend getting led's if u are gonna blackout the tails. The stock lights will be hard to see in the sunlight, especially if u go really dark, leds will be a bit more brighter. At one point I had put the blackout covers on all my lights, but I upgraded to leds in the turn signals and installed tail lights with Halo mod and didnt put the covers back on. I do like the blacked out look though.

Never mind insurance... if you get rear ended, even though it's almost impossible to be wrong being in front; with blacked out lights the guy behind might have a case on you.
Looks pretty cool on some colors, yes
Good idea, no
so if I just let off the gas with a manual car,(which I do often, plus downshift my brake lights are a non factor) what do the brakes lights mean ????? I watch the speed of the car and adjust accordingly, if you are waiting to see brakes lights most times it's already too late !!!! Pay attention !!!!!!!! in the winter half the cars don't sweep the snow off the back of the car. I have seen many cars and trucks so dirty you would never be able to see the lights !!!!!!!!!!

Awesome logic !!
I personally don't understand brake lights or back up lights.
And we should petition car manufactures to quit wasting money on rear defrosters too. And wipers. The people with snow on the back glass and front is mind boggling.
I hope this becomes a thing, you've got some incredible insight into what's safe.

Don't even get me started on the baby seat rule
Maybe you should watch some video's of winter chain reaction accidents when car after car slams into the one in front of them, sometimes more than thirty cars never touch the brakes !!!!!
So I'm guessing you've also sold that arm on the side of your steering wheel for parts because nobody needs to know if you're turning, just pay attention to your speed and we'll
figure out the rest. Gotcha.

You must be one of the many that went to the school that the turn signal gives you the right to change lanes ????? I try not to get to involved with this kind of crap, I will drive using my vision to tell me when to let off the gas or hit the brakes, it has served me well so far having driven hundreds of thousand miles without even coming close to hitting someone in the rear, or any where else for that matter !!!!
Just curious on opinions, what're are some good blackout tail lights to buy? I've seen so many options
For the actual topic at hand, OP you really have a couple of basic choices. Acrylic overlay, or a coated lens. I had my lights all done with a gel coat by Richard at Corvette Enhancements back in 2006 or 2007. This is how well they've held up:
For being almost a decade old now, it was WELL worth the investment. Treat them like you would your paint and they'll last just as long.
Tinted is the way to go IMO. I had the acrylic covers for a while, but I felt they looked cheap comparatively as there was no contour to them at all the rear side markers weren't addressed.

Lightly shaded then clear coated mine myself...did the red covers in the doors pretty dark... the tag lights... front turns... side markers..and tail lights
Not sure why, but the red reflector in the door was about the only thing about this car that was driving me crazy... I hated it... most people don't even notice that I blacked it out... but, I do every time I open the door I grin...

Mine are a simple vinyl cover /tint. Not black but a dark cherry color after applied. I have LED's and always drive with at least my parking lights on to keep my tails lit
