Just wanted to ask for some help. I searched and read many threads on backup cameras here, but not exactly the same info that I am looking for.
I bought Magellan kit that has the 5" screen + wireless backup camera to install in my '98 coupe.
Picture of the camera and transmitter attached. The camera is on a license plate bracket and has a long cable with female RCA and barrel connectors. The transmitter is separate, with short cable and male RCA and barrel connectors, and short wires for hardwiring to the reverse light. It's designed for installations that the camera cable would be snaked inside the body and locate the transmitter inside the trunk and make all wiring connections inside the dry trunk.
Seems like I could do this in different ways on a C5. I haven't done much on my C5, so I'm not sure where everything is, but it looks the wiring doesn't enter the rear tub.
I think I could either install the kit with transmitter inside by drilling into the interior and also bringing the reverse light wiring into the interior. Or I could just install everything outside the tub and count on heatshrink for waterproofing.
you could do whatever is easier for you, I drilled a hole though the back of the tub in the center package well. (wired backup) then sealed it with silicone. I took the complete backup assy. off the car.
I just put in a wireless camera because I did not want to drill any holes in the back of my car. When you remove the license plate bracket to get to the wiring for the backup lights, there is plenty of room and access there to place the wires and transmitter in that area between the rear fascia and the trunk. The whole advantage of that system is to not have to drill any holes in the car so why would you do that to put it into the trunk when there's so much room, protected from the elements, back there? It's easy to connect to the backup light wiring by using crimped on wire taps, the whole thing takes 5-10 min. The hardest part of it is deciding where to place the monitor, mine sits over the ashtray opening velcroed to a hanger bracket I made which slips over the top of the ashtray door, easily removable if I need access to the lighter plug.
As soon as my $5 camera arrives from China, I'm going to connect up a front camera to avoid those annoying curb bumps and scrapes when parking. This one will probably be hardwired because I don't need any holes drilled into the car to hook it up.
