Bill, Yes it was.....that wind blowing across the place was freezing, plus we were able to enjoy shoveling off the grinders before we marched. Still can remember my company....086. Stayed there for Hospital Corps school before hitting the fleet ! Best time of my life..
Some things never change - Great Lakes Jan-Mar 1970 Graduated March 27th, we had to shovel our way off base damn near to O'Hare. It was COLD all 3 months. Off to Radio A school in Maryland, then to Philadelphia and Charleston shipyards, last 2 years in Panama Canal Zone.
Once again, thanks you to everyone for all the kind wishes. He mentioned he will be in his white cracker jack uniform. I can't wait to see him tomorrow.

Enjoy
As mentioned by other, my son graduated I believe Jan 26th.....
Gawd was it cold and windy.
Oh..1 thing..IIRC you can take them out on the town for thew weekend...do not be late bringing them back.
And beware as traffic can jamb up on the road back pretty quickly.
leave an hour early.....we made it by a matter of minutes.
Also ask your son if he knows someone who's parent cannot make it.
We did and took him out on the town with us, he certainly earned it.

Thank you and that's a great idea to take some of the other sailors with us.
We've got subs pretty well covered on this forum. I was a SINS (Ships Inertial Navigation System) tech on the USS Tecumseh SSBN 628 Gold from 1963 to 1966 out of Hawaii and Guam and the USS Thomas Jefferson SSBN 618 Gold from 1968 through 1970 out of the yards in Newport News and then Holy Loch, Scotland and New London, Conn. Went to boot and electronics technician A school at Great Lakes. Being from Ripon, Wis had its perks. Had to bootleg margarine in the trunk of my car up into Wisconsin as they outlawed margarine at that time. Had a 1950 Ford for those treks home. Good luck to your son and glad you're there for his graduation.
My oldest son also graduated Navy BCT in Great Lakes... He spent 5 yrs active, recently ETS'd and went to work for General Dynamics doing the same job making 3x what he was in the Navy. 25 y/o kid.... working in Japan as I type.
I too served 30 yrs US Army.... don't hate...
Congrats to you and your boy, says a lot about his character during these uncertain times.
Congrats to your son! I joined in 1977 as a Data Processing Tech, learned computers & Operating systems on the USS Blueridge (C&C ship), USS Orion (sub tender), and NSA where I learned UNIX which gave me some very nice civilian $$$ jobs, which led to a couple of Vettes!!!
It was great to see my son again..... but now, we won't see him again for about 3 more months. BUT the good thing is, he's got his cell phone back so at least I'll get to talk to him !!
