Default random tech hfc vs universal

So, my goal is to make 350hp or relatively close to it. Im building the car like a local did who has an a4 at 340hp/400 w/nos. He has nothing but an intake, shorty headers, high flow cats and straight pipes.

Im going to same route because im not going to make much power even with lts on an auto I heard from a local who got rid of his lts off his auto.

^Please dont ask me how thats possible. I dont know, thats just what I was told

So my question here is has anyone used universal high flow cats and got the same results as Random techs?

I can get universals for half of random techs that I had for my 240sx that made a huge difference off the stock cat. Id say a 5hp gain but I had full headers and exhaust back then.

If there are good universals that are the same or close to random techs, please list companies please. Im book marking my future orders.

Thanks for taking the time to answer.

An auto will have more loss, pull less RWHP than an equal motor stick, but adding headers... the motor will get a similar percentage of gain for either (30ish).
I went with Magnaflow cats, all good.

Grant, figured you'd be the first. Did you use magnaflow high flow cats or just oem style? I cant add full headers ive mentioned this numerous times. All emission centers around here complain about it.

I almost had my 240 with full headers, hfc and exhaust towed by the emission place despite having it previously tested and passing better than a stock car. The people here who have full headers live in emission free counties which allow them to do such mods. Im not risking it.

As for the loss in rwhp, the guy I mentioned has just about the same hp as another c5 member with full headers on an auto. its like 10 or 20hp less than the original guy with shorties. I dont car about that difference. I need something easy to remove without having to go to the shop. Which is why shorties are my best route Grant.

3" high flow metallic universal. I doubt that the Random Tech would have much if any gain on a reasonable motor.
As for your not being able to use headers, I would not easily remember yousaying that in other posts, too many members.

I have a base model so everyhtings 2.5" Grant. So my next question to you is that if you didnt get a tune for the magnaflow cats, did you get an engine light? I wont be getting a tune right away.

So you already have the shorties installed then? If so, and you have no warnings (assuming you had a tune for them?), a cat change SB OK AFAIK.
Are your existing cats faulty? If not replacing them is kind of pointless IMO.

No sir, not untill probably next year sometime. I heard you dont get an engine light with shorties because its pretty much just shiny headers.

The current cats arent faulty but are very restrictive.

This is what Im aiming for if someone here buys my current exhaust or trades for slps. This is just the borla straights and an x-pipe.

This vid is my goal in mind.

Your current cats are costing you 1.5-2hp, High flow cats will give you an additional .5hp. Unless your cats are plugged, there is no real hp gains. John Heinrocket had his new C7 tuned and gained a few hp but improved his midrange (about 428hp). When he was at a car show someone had a dyno and his corrected SAE power magically went to 553hp.

If you want to find out how much hp your car is really making take it to the drags and find out your trap speed, make you changes/additions/tune etc and then find out how much your trap speed improved.
