Default Battery Question

I currently have an AutoCraft Gold battery in my '98 MN6 Convertible. Noticed recently when I started trying to trace and fix some electrical issues with the car that it was started to lead battery acid from around the top posts and such. Cleaned everything up but just noticed it's still leaking.

Planning to soon go and get a Optima Yellowtop or Redtop battery. From what I've seen on the forum those are the best options for a battery that doesn't leak.

My question is that do you think I can get any sort of credit for my current battery. I'm not sure I can call it defective since it holds a charge without any issue and still cranks the car. It just leaks. Was curious if I could take it in to Advanced and get some credit towards the new battery. Or do I just suck it up and go with what I probably should have bought in the first place....

Lots of missing information...
When did you buy the battery?
How long is the warranty?
Why are you leaving a leaking battery in your car for one more minute!? (you know the PCM is directly below?)

You are correct...lots of missing info. Battery is ~2.5 years old (Bought April 2014). For the warranty I'm not 100% sure, but at best it's a three year warranty (so I'm getting close to the end). Given that line of thought I'm guessing I should just move on to the new battery...

Never fear about it being in the car...it's out now, as of this evening when I noticed it leaking again. Planning to get a new one tomorrow.

A leaking battery is defective even if it holds a charge. The shop can scan the barcode and tell you if the warranty is still valid. IMHO the red top is crap. I've never had one last more than 18 months. The yellow top seems to do better as its a deep cycle battery.

Just went through this (not leaking battery, but replacing an old one) after all the searching and advice I went with the Advance Auto Platinum AGM, went up a size from the red top it replaced - perfect fit:

You'll probably get lots of opinions on which battery is best. I've had two Optima Red Tops - one lasted nearly 7 years and was still going strong when I sold the car and the other lasted about one month past the three year mark and went bad. Replaced that one with a Sears DieHard Platinum - that's been nearly 6 years ago and it is still working just fine. I do not think they make the DieHard Platinum any more, but they do make a DieHard Gold Plus (I think) so it may be worth looking into that one.

I've never had a problem with the Optima (Redtop) batteries. Mine have always lasted 5-8 years with no problems.

I have had several red and yellow tops in cars and boats, none have lasted. Here is the latest I just pulled out of my 97 C5 last week, you can see the date code on the top -3 years. Will not even take a charge at this point, will never buy another one.
