Default Sticker shock!

Yesterday I had to take our work truck (a Silverado) in for a recall. While I waited, I walked around the lot looking at the new Vettes. I could not believe the prices on these things! The least expensive one they had was $84K. They had a supercharged Z06 that was $116K. Who's buying these things at these prices? I can remember when you could buy a brand new C5 for $40K. And I don't mean any offense to those who may have one, but I think the C7 is ugly. It's gaudy looking. I know they're a hellova car performance wise, but the nice clean lines of the C5 and C6 are gone. No thanks!

Well, the same can be said for the price of trucks - they are not exactly cheap anymore. For the price, the C7 is a performance bargain. As far as looks, it's a matter of personal preference just like any other car. I think the C7 is one fine looking ride.

I think the C7s look great, but more of a "tomorrowland the future is today great". I just wish the flip up headlights we still "in".

I guess if a person makes 7 figures a year, they could afford a vehicle this expensive, or drag out the payments for 10 years...

The same can be said for a new truck. You can put 50,000-60,000 in a new truck. It is all relevant, you supposedly make more, so they charge more.
Remember back when you could get a fully loaded Vette, brand new for 5 grand? Wouldn't that be nice today!

The showroom models have every option I don't want. Just give me the $65k Canadian dollar bare bones model.

I did a fast 12 year compound interest calculation base on a 3% inflation rate on my 04 sticker price and it came to $77,600. Looking at the mechanical and electronic improvements on the new Vette vs C5, the $84K does not seem unreasonable. Like you grampi50, I like the style of the C5 over the C7 aka the TRON.

A little high. The average inflation rate over the last 20 years is around 2.5%.

From a $39,900 start in 1997 (the then C5 base price), 19 years later the price should be in the low '60's. In fact a base C7 is listed at $55k and change, so it's not at all out of line. The big difference is in the options. My '98, bought in '97 had every option for it's day (one expensive item being the manual transmission) - around $44k, IIRC. Of course there were no up priced model variations at the time, which is where the money is made - dealers and manufacturers hate selling base cars for that reason. Some base cars are breakeven for them at best - they only exist to get you into the showroom.

But as there is no C7 option to have sleek, timeless body styling, I'll pass. Not a fan of "video game" styling. I often think that if the C5 had never been built and a car looking like it appeared today as a Jaguar (or even a Buick concept), the press would be all over it.

And, to grami50: Ever worked out the prices of a loaded dually diesel pickup? Not too different from a Vette. And think how many of them you see on the road. Or parked in front of very modest homes. I see a lot of them out in rural WV, which have also had $$$ spent on them what with suspension lifts, wheels, tires, etc., etc. Just differing priorities I guess.

I think a lot of people lease them - which brings up an interesting possibility - just lease a late-model as a track day car - you'll definitely stay under the 15k miles a year they typically give you. I wonder when leasing a vette if they have special T's and C's in the contract about "abuse?"

Yep, not sure what year the Silverado you drove in was, but it'd probably be $50K new. That's just to dump dirt into (which most people don't!?). No amazing performance characteristics like the C7, etc.
That said, I also don't like the C7, but that's another story for another day / strings of posts.

When I saw what a new diesel was selling for, I went back to looking at the C7.

And like the C7, you can't get a "base" truck from a normal dealer anymore. I want base as in NO LEATHER IN MY TRUCK.

But seriously, try to find something that compares to the Z06 for the same price or less.

And there were 2 C7's at the remote Nike campus by my old company. Out of the 50 cars at Nike, at least half of them cost $75k+ and a few were easy 6 figure cars.

That is who is buying them.

<edit> Short list of comps
ACR Viper is $150k+
GT-R is $150k+
Audi R8 V10 is $160k+

So for $40k less, you have a Z06. $40k gets you a lot of gas and beer.

Black is a whole other world for the C7, does a decent job of hiding that horrible rear. But black is always best, and it doesn't save the C7, just makes it tolerable. Just my 2c

A lot of people are buying (or leasing) them actually. The introductory C7 year 2014 saw some of the highest sales numbers in more recent Corvette history. It's been a rather extraordinary time for the Corvette. The recent release of the Grand Sport is also helping as now there is an incredibly large "strike zone" into what you can buy.

The other really good thing GM has going for them that honestly baffled me that it took so long for them to figure out is a new Z06 (and the Grand Sport) can be configured pretty much however you want it. It's not like a C5 Z06 where you could only get a manual and were stuck with a hard top. GM has given near free reign on ordering a car however you want. You can get it in a convertible, auto or manual, any major amounts of over rides (if it's not on hold or there is allocation). Pretty much the only major limits is how much you want to spend, which honestly is how it should be.

When I was at the NCM right after the C7 Z06 came out few years back, five of the museum delivery cars were Z06 and three had the Z07 package. Not one was below a $90,000 MSRP based on options as presented and one car with the Z07 package was just under $120,000 as presented.

I love the new C7. I am from the video game generation though so the styling is right up my alley. I'm not going to be able to get any model new but I do hope to get into a good used one in a few years. I can't wait to have both a C5 and a C7 side by side.

So much customization they let you add gawd awful red interior to ANY exterior color even if the design team tells you it's ugly as sin.

And it's not even close.

I read a few weeks ago, one of the bigger forum dealers was blowing out leftover '16 models. I think some were in the high 40's. Probably a low options but still, that seems pretty cheap for the performance.

I am very happy that someone else loves the new C7's as my plan is to buy it off them when they move on, the same way I have bought all my previous Corvettes (Now hurry up and trade it in,lol) PS I truly love EVERYTHING about the C7 Stingrays!
