I believe in the Beer Fairy
You just got a GREAT offer from Josh above. The job is a time consuming one but if you've got the tools it's not really that bad, just a lot of work. Sadly, there's no easy way on those.
I think the typical pricing on R&R of a balancer is really steep, but it is what it is. My first ever one I did on my car I did in less time than the manual calls out. So, of course you get billed for that entire time and they spend half that if they're any good at it.
A lift is a super big help, I don't have one. If I did I'd say bring it for a Saturday swap and bring a case of beer. I've got all the tools, but on the floor that job ain't fun.
that's insane, even if you factor in a nice aftermarket balancer like an ati or innovators west it's still too much
I was thinking that, but they have a really good reputation. There are 2 brands that are best to use, right? ATI and another brand that begins with an "A" if I recall? How much is reasonable for ATI parts and install? It's like a 7-8 hour job for a shop, right?

The thing I notice with most shops is that they really only thrive on the easy stuff like tires, brakes, oil changes, swapping sensors and tune ups and stuff
Any real work they don't like it, and they will nail you with a huge estimate
They are really telling you that they don't want the job and its better to take it somewhere else
I have grown to really despise mechanics over the years for their lack of help with anything difficult , aftermarket or new to them.
They don't really have any passion for their work or cars in general from what I can see

in a sense you are right, the problem is the "shop" gets most of the profit and the tech gets screwed so that's why they like to do the easy stuff that doesn't pay too bad and they can knock it out fast and move on to the next one... if people were paid right I guarantee you the quality of work would go up but if places don't want to pay the right people then they will leave and you get stuck with less knowledgeable employees that are paid less but the customer still pays a high rate
