Default Early EBCM

I am confused. Autozone lists an ABS module for a 1997 C5 and states it is in stock, but nothing for a 1998. The manufacturer is BSE. I looked up the ABS system part number on gmpartsdirect.com and they show the same part no. for 1997 and 1998 - and the Autozone/BSE unit references that part number. But Autozone says there is no replacement available for 1998 cars.

For 1999, gmpartsdirect lists two units - with and without active brake control (part of AH, I assume).

If anyone can thrown any light on this, please do.

As I have an early '98 - 1st week of production, I am tempted to order the unit from Autozone and see what happens.

I'm wondering if they forgot to update their website.

Interesting. Hope it's true. I have a '98 that was made in May of '98 but doesn't have the active handling. Just the traction control. Wonder if it's the same one?

FWIW, I put in a '98 C5 for this part and it comes up with "this does not fit your vehicle"...

Remember all 1997 corvettes had the EBCM mounted in the rear. Sometime during the 1998 model year, the EBCM was moved to the front. Could be the difference between the 1997 and 1998 part.

Ebcm is same its rear or front. If i remember right, bracket was different and one breakline connector was different. But those parts you can take from old ebcm.

My '98 shop manuals show it installed in the rear. Going to get underneath this w/e and take a look.

What we need to find out is at what VIN number AH was introduced, as that seems to be the change date away from this early EBCM. We are not supposed to post non supporting vendors URL's here, so if you are interested, look for "C5 build dates by VIN" with Google and it will aim you at part of the c5registry - organized by month.

Also, from everything I have read, it is not this ABS-only unit that is prone to failure, but the later unit with AH. Anyone confirm or deny?

Sure would be nice if was a replacement for an M code EBCM. Mine is an early 98, so for all practical purposes it is really a 97.

My 98's build date was 1/26/98, front mount EBCM ("M" model) without AH.

AH was not an available option at the time of my car order (12/11/97).

My '98 Non-Active handling EBCM is an M model. My car was manufactured in May of '98.

It depends on the GM part number. The '97 replacement only covers certain OEM part numbers. That's what I will try to check on mine this w/e.

Those aholes list everything as 'in stock'. Did the same thing when I was looking for a PCM. Said 'in stock', but after a few calls come to find out that not only is it not in stock, it's not going to be in stock either. They use a rebuild service for those, and if by the grace of god one comes in, you could put yourself on a waiting list to get it. But don't hold your breath.

I may just order one - I put one in the cart and clicked on check out, and it came up with a scheduled delivery date. Guess I'll drop into my local store this week and see what they say.

BTW, crawled under the rear and the EBTCM/BPMA is where the manual says it is behind the diff, but any sticker on it with a part number is long gone.

To Grampi50 - yes it says that it does not fit a '98, but the reality is that very early '98's (before AH was an option), had the same set up as '97's, with the ABS units at the rear.

It's a good thing if you don't have the Active Handling. Mine just has the traction control and that's it. From what I've heard this version doesn't go out as often as the others.
