With a Jan 04 build date the GM Column Lock Service fix would have been installed at the factory. But keep in mind that the GM Recall Service was a total piece of crap and and is NOT a permanent solution that prevents the column lock symptoms from occurring. A weak or bad battery or loose or corroded battery connections including at the starter WILL cause the column lock symptoms EVEN with the GM Recall Service done.
If I owned any manual transmission C5 I would order and install an LMC5 to prevent the column lock symptoms once and for all. I would also do the "optional" brown wire mod as explained on the 2nd page of the install instructions to avoid having to run into the "pull key and......" issue some time after installing the LMC5.

I have been wondering about the column lock in my '04 since I got the car in Feb; the steering wheel does not lock at all. I have no idea what or if anything has been done to it or if this is just normal operation of a '04.
Sooooo....just how is the column lock supposed to operate in a '04 with manual trans?
Well look in the fuse box the one in the pass. side in the foot well might have one in it that's were the LMC5 goes if it has one of these .. The column luck just tells the 04 to keep the column lock open that's about it in the manual does not tell the trans anything .. Sounds like you have one installed ,unless someone has removed the lock all together witch is very hard to do .
8VETTE7: Well I always wondered what that BZZZZZZT noise was upon turning the key...now I know, thank you.
Could you explain a bit further how the column lock would ever become a problem if a smaller diameter lock ring has been installed which prevents the column from locking....how would this fail and let the column lock.
8VETTE7: Thank you for the detailed explanation. It is defiantly the column lock motor and not the fuel pump I hear.
I followed what you wrote and I just need to take a look under the steering column now that I have a better understanding of what to look for. Pretty sure there is no LMC5 installed; I think I would have noticed that the last time I had the floor panel off...which was just last week.
I have had the dash all apart as I had to repair the HUD projector; did not work upon car delivery, but was not looking for anything under the steering column at that time.
I am convinced that I should just get an LMC5 and install it as a preventative measure.
So thank you again for taking some time and effort to reply; hopefully others benefit as well.
