Default HELP! 02 Z06 Big Problem

Hey everyone,

I have an 02 Z06 and it has been having a problem under power. It feels like a miss and is making a strange noise (sounds like crackling in exhaust).

At idle and normal driving, it runs fine. No check engine light. But as soon as I get on it at around 3k rpms the check engine light flashes and cuts throttle. (traction control is off so I know its not that)

Also the power isn't all there. This happened out of no where, one day it ran fine and now I'm having this problem. I'm thinking its something with the computer. I have an OBDII scanner plugged in while I'm driving and it has a mode where you can run a test while driving. So with the test running I WOT and it has the miss, but the scanner says link error every time.

I know these cars have a lot of problems with ground wires so any suggestions on what I should do will be greatly appreciated.

Also I am located in the Bay Area, so if anyone knows of good tuners I could take it too that could help as well.

Thank you

If it's falling on it's face above a certain RPM it could be low fuel pressure.

Have you pulled any codes off of the DIC?

Is the engine modded? Headers? Burnt wire?

Bad injector, bad coil, burnt or loose plug wire. I'd check each of those first.

Did this happen after recently fueling up? Maybe a bad batch of gas at a station. Or, if you don't drive it too often, the ethanol in the fuel may have separated like water and oil do causing super poor octane. Kinda sounds like a detonation issue.

Yeah it has headers. But how do I read the codes off DIC?

Don't believe that its the gas. The problem occurred on the same tank and it hasn't been sitting for an extended period of time.

This post explains the process and has a list of the trouble codes.

If it has cats check them to make sure the brick has not moved
I have had a few fail both factory and aftermarket.
Some aftermarket cats are a folded metal substrate not a ceramic core they can and do shift and will cause similar symptoms by rectricting flow from one side of the engine. it has happened to both of our race cars we run cats to save points in the class.
The reduced power and skip combined with the noise makes me believe this is the issue.

I had the same thing. Fuel injector. Again, and again. Finally had them all replaced and no more issues.
